Leaf v0.14.0 - Folders, Pokémon mini, RPG Maker, and New Languages

Leaf v0.14.0 can show your ROM subfolders as folders, and it now tells your second SD
cards apart, so swapping cards keeps each one's games, favorites, and playtime. Titles
sort the way you'd expect, you can pin games to the top of a list, and Central
Scrutinizer can edit titles and descriptions from your browser. Pokémon mini and RPG
Maker games run, standalone emulators come out upright on a TV, and the speaker is
louder. Leaf now speaks German, Dutch, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese.

Folders in your game lists

Turn on Settings > Games > Show Folders to see a system's ROM subfolders as rows.
It's off by default.

  • A opens a folder and B leaves it. Folders come first, then the games in that
    folder.
  • When you quit a game, you're back in the same folder on the same game.
  • A folder that's really one game's own folder, like an RPG Maker game or a Saturn game
with its tracks, shows as that game.
  • The same folder on both SD cards shows as one folder.
  • Favorites, Recents, search, the Game Switcher, and the 5-Game picker stay
    as one list.

Thanks to nguyenthientam317 for asking for
this.

Second SD cards

Leaf now knows which second card is which.

  • Swapping second cards keeps each card's games, favorites, recents, playtime,
per-game settings, and hidden games. Leaf remembers the 8 most recent cards it isn't
using. Before, a different card's first scan deleted all of that for the previous
    card.
  • Taking a card out removes its games from your lists, and they come back with the
card. Before, they stayed listed, couldn't launch, and Rescan Library couldn't
    clear them.
  • If two cards hold a game at the same path, each keeps its own playtime and settings.
  • A reformatted card, or a copy onto a bigger card, keeps its data if it has at least
16 games and at least 90% of them are still in the same place. A smaller card starts
fresh. Cards that hold nearly all the same files, and cards cloned from one image,
    count as one card.
  • Central Scrutinizer's game counts and RAOfflineProxy's game picker leave out cards
that aren't in the slot. The picker needs RAOfflineProxy 0.1.2.

See A second SD card, which also has
the new steps for moving games off a second card. Thanks to Masque for reporting the
games that stayed listed.

Sorting and pins

  • Titles now sort ignoring case and with numbers in order, so "Mega Man 2" comes before
"Mega Man 10", and a lowercase title no longer lands after "Zelda". This applies to a
system's list, Favorites, Hidden Games, and folder names.
  • Pin to Top in a game's Options menu moves it to the top of its system's list,
and the row becomes Unpin. Pins only order a system's own list, not
    Favorites, Recents, or search.

Edit your library in Central Scrutinizer

Open a console's card in Central Scrutinizer and choose Game Info.

  • Change a game's title and description, or reset either one. Your files are never
renamed, so saves keep working, and a later scrape doesn't overwrite your
    description.
  • Change many titles at once with find and replace, or strip region and version tags.
You see every change before it applies, with a checkbox for each.
  • Export titles and descriptions as CSV, edit them in a spreadsheet, and import them
    back through the same preview.
  • Undo last bulk change reverses the last bulk change.
  • The Order tab pins games and folders and arranges them by drag or with buttons.
This is the only place to pin a folder or reorder your pins.

The launcher refreshes after each save, and it keeps the game you have selected. The
handheld only shows descriptions in the Grid home layout.

Pokémon mini

Pokémon mini games now run on the PokeMini core.

  • Copy your .min games, loose or in .zip or .7z, into Roms/POKEMINI/.
    Roms/POKE/, Roms/PKM/, and Roms/POKEMONMINI/ work too.
  • Scrape Artwork finds these games on ScreenScraper, and the system has its own art
in every home layout and a card in Central Scrutinizer.
  • The BIOS is optional. If you have a dump of the real one, name it bios.min and put
    it directly in BIOS/.
  • R1 is C and L1 is Shake, for games like Pokémon Pinball Mini.
SELECT is the console's Power button, so pressing it leaves a blank screen
    until you press it again.
  • The first time you start a game, it asks you to set the clock, as a new console did.

Thanks to nguyenthientam317 for asking for
this one too.

RPG Maker games

RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 games run on the EasyRPG core, by the
EasyRPG team. The EasyRPG core in earlier Leaf releases couldn't
load on the device, so these games never started.

  • Copy each game's folder, as it comes, into Roms/EASYRPG/, such as
    Roms/EASYRPG/The Linear Game/RPG_RT.ldb.
  • Each game is named after its folder, and its art goes in Images/EASYRPG/ under the
    folder's name.
  • Scrape Artwork searches ScreenScraper by the folder's name, and tries once more
without a version at the end.
  • Music in Ogg Vorbis, MP3, and Opus plays, besides WAV and MIDI. MENU opens the
    in-game menu.
  • The core can't make save states, so use each game's own save menu.

Thanks to nguyenthientam317 for reporting that
these games didn't work.

Standalone emulators on a TV

Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and Saturn games run in standalone emulators that used to
assume the handheld's screen, so on a TV the picture came out on its side.

  • Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 games are upright and use the TV's mode. With HDMI
    Output
on 4:3 they're centered, and on Stretch they fill the screen. Saturn
    games are upright too.
  • With HDMI Output on Off and a cable plugged in, these games stay on the
built-in screen. Before, they moved to the TV, and the device could stay black after
    you quit.
  • When you quit one, Leaf sets the display back the way HDMI Output has it.
  • Screenshots and the paused game behind the in-game menu are upright on a TV.
  • Unplugging the TV during a RetroArch game no longer crashes RetroArch. It closes the
game within a few seconds and keeps your in-game save.

Thanks to pixelmentia for reporting the sideways
picture.

Louder speaker

At 100%, the speaker and headphones now play as loud as the stock firmware at its
maximum, about 4.4 dB louder than before. Leaf also saves your volume on the stock
firmware's own scale, so switching to the stock launcher keeps the volume you had in
Leaf, and exact 5% steps survive a restart. Thanks to
codecme47 for reporting the low volume.

Deutsch, Nederlands, 한국어, and Português (Brasil)

Settings > System > Language now offers Deutsch, Nederlands (België),
한국어, and Português (Brasil).

  • 한국어 is by cumasterns-cpu and covers every
screen. Leaf now ships a font with Korean characters, so Korean game names show in any
language, in the launcher, PPSSPP's menus, and the File Explorer.
  • Nederlands (België) covers every screen.
  • Português (Brasil) is by muniz95, and covers 1,076 of
    1,743 strings so far.
  • Deutsch comes from a contributor who asked not to be named.
  • AlexL made most of the remaining English labels
translatable, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth messages, Pak Rat, System Update,
scraping, and the delete dialogs, and translated them into 中文.
  • Eric Reinsmidt made every language file list
every string, so translators can see what's missing.
  • Русский was reviewed by Atanvaron and
    LVD14.

Languages that aren't finished show the new strings in English until they're
translated. To help finish one, see
Translate Leaf.

Fun DraStic now follows your Leaf language in Spanish and Chinese, and its MENU
LANGUAGE
row is gone. Other languages show English. Thanks to
AlexL.

Nintendo 64

  • In the standalone emulator, Input Mode now works on this device. D-Pad, the
default, sends the N64 d-pad, and Joystick steers the analog stick with the d-pad,
for games that only read the stick. Change it in MENU > Options > Controls > Input
    Mode
, or bind Options > Shortcuts > Toggle Input Mode to a button. Each game
    keeps its own mode.
  • You can bind a d-pad direction to any N64 button, such as the C buttons, in
    Options > Controls.
  • The Rice video plugin now caps its texture cache at 32 MB. Paper Mario's
fortune-telling scene ran the device out of memory and closed the game.

Thanks to AlexL for both.

Fun DraStic cheats

Fun DraStic's Cheats page reads its cheat database properly now. It lists about
145,000 cheats, up from about 89,000, and 44 games that showed none now list theirs,
such as Dragon Quest IX. Turning a cheat on applies its codes, which about 36,000
cheats didn't do before. Cheats with Chinese names show in every language, and long
cheats keep all their codes. Thanks to AlexL for reporting
the missing Chinese cheats.

Other improvements

  • Square cover art: box art in your lists, Recents, Favorites, and search
is now square. To get the rounded look back, turn on Settings > Appearance > Round
    Cover Art
    .
  • Scraping a renamed game: if you renamed a game with Display Name and
ScreenScraper doesn't recognize its file, Scrape Artwork now tries that name once
before giving up. The art is still saved under the file's name.
  • MENU + button hotkeys no longer pass the button to the game for one frame. On Game
Boy, Game Boy Color, and GBA games running on gambatte or gpSP, fast-forward on
MENU + R2 now turns off on the first press.
  • Pressing MENU in a Game & Watch game no longer closes it.
  • The Favorites tab no longer draws a star on each row, since every game there is
    one.
  • Options menu rows are closer together, so longer menus show more before
    scrolling.
  • Removing a Pak Rat app during a library scan no longer says the library refresh
    failed.

Pak Rat

These are already in Pak Rat, and all of them install on Leaf v0.13.0 too.

  • J2ME is new. It plays the Java games phones ran before smartphones, with the
    FreeJ2ME-Plus core by AShiningRay,
    recompileorg, hex007,
    and the FreeJ2ME-Plus contributors.
Install it, then copy your .jar games into Roms/J2ME/. See the
    J2ME page.
  • DSperate 3.0.5 adds DSperate TATE, which stacks the two DS screens down the
long side of the screen, about a third bigger. Mario Kart DS runs more smoothly too.
By beebono. With this release, TATE also gets your
RetroAchievements account, and its controls stay put on a TV.
  • Yabadabadoo 0.4.0 is built from upstream v0.4, by
    ProRapSuperstarOriginalMaster.
Most 3D games run faster, CHD games play CD audio from the right place, and Reset
    no longer leaks memory.
  • RAOfflineProxy 0.1.2 leaves games on a missing second card out of Prepare one
    game
, and explains what to do when it has no token.
  • Disco Boy 0.2.2 skips a Music folder on a second card that isn't mounted.
  • Nimbus 0.2.0 adds a 12 or 24-hour clock, air quality, and a feels-like range. By
    Geekstrada.
  • Syncthing 0.1.1 makes it easier to connect to an existing Syncthing hub.
  • SDLReader 2.5.3 no longer runs out of memory on large PDF manuals.

Going back to v0.13.0

  • If you swapped second cards on v0.14.0, games from your other cards show in v0.13.0's
lists but won't launch. Update again and they're hidden, with nothing lost.
  • v0.13.0 may read your saved volume as louder than you set it.

Thank you

Thanks to everyone outside the team whose work is in this release:
