Leaf v0.13.0 - Save on Power Off, Delete Games, and New Languages

Leaf v0.13.0 can save your RetroArch game when you hold the power button, and open it
where you left off the next time you turn the device on. You can hide games you don't
want to see and delete games from your SD card without a computer. Leaf now speaks
Vietnamese and Russian, the light ring can show your battery, and a released analog
stick reads as centered. In Pak Rat, Yabadabadoo adds an experimental Saturn core
that brings its own RetroArch and still uses Leaf's in-game menu.

Save your game when you power off

Turn on Settings > Games > Save Before Power Off. It is off by default. When you then
hold the power button to shut down during a RetroArch game, Leaf shows Preparing to
save
and asks you to let go of the button. Once you do, it saves the game to its
quick-save slot and powers off. Pick it up from Recents or the Game Switcher, or
have Leaf open it for you with Resume Game on Boot.

  • Let go when the prompt appears. The save only starts after you release, and if you
keep holding, Leaf shuts down without saving.
  • If the save can't be made, Leaf shuts down as it always has and leaves your previous
    quick save as it was.
  • Standalone emulators, including the ones paks add, and apps shut down without
saving, as before. So do MENU > Power Off and restarts.

Resume Game on Boot

Settings > Games > Resume Game on Boot is off by default and needs Save Before
Power Off
. After a power-off save, the next time you turn the device on, Leaf opens
the game and loads it where you left off, with a Resuming your game banner.

  • Hold B while Leaf starts to go to the launcher instead. The save stays, so you can
still open it from Recents or the Game Switcher.
  • If the save can't be loaded, for example because you changed the game's core or its
SD card is missing, Leaf opens the launcher and tells you. Open the game from
Recents or the Game Switcher to try the save again.
  • RetroAchievements Hardcore mode doesn't allow loading a save, so with Hardcore on,
Leaf opens the launcher and says so. Turn Hardcore off in RetroArch's
Achievements settings if you want your games to resume. RetroArch's Hardcore
setting alone, without a RetroAchievements account, doesn't stop a resume.
  • Leaf tries once per power off. Games on either SD card work, even when the device
swaps the two cards' places between boots.
  • With RAOfflineProxy on, the resume waits a few seconds for it to start and then
    plays through it.

Thanks to AlexL for reporting the Hardcore problem during
testing.

Force Off Hold

Whatever is running, the handheld's power chip cuts power once you hold the power
button long enough. That was 6 seconds, which left Leaf too little time to finish a
clean shutdown if you kept holding. Leaf now sets it to 10 seconds, and you can
choose 6, 8, 10, or 12 sec in Settings > System > Force Off Hold.

A normal shutdown is still a 2 second hold. If the device ever freezes, hold the power
button for the full Force Off Hold time. Until Leaf has started, and in the stock
firmware, the hold stays at 6 seconds.

Hide a game

Press X (Options) on a game in Games, Favorites, or Recents and choose
Hide Game. The game disappears right away from its system's list and game count,
Search, Favorites, Recents, and the Game Switcher. Nothing is deleted:
its file, saves, states, artwork, and per-game settings stay as they were.

  • To bring it back, open Settings > Games > Hidden Games, pick the game, and press
    A.
  • Hide Game works for every system. Hiding works per card, so a copy of the same
game on your other SD card stays visible.
  • If you go back to v0.12.1 or earlier, your hidden games show up again. They're hidden
    again when you update.

Delete a game

Options > Delete Game removes the game you picked from your SD card: the file you
launch and every file it names. A .m3u takes its discs with it, a .cue its tracks,
and a .gdi, .toc, or .cmd the files it lists.

  • The confirmation shows how many files the game has, how much space they take, and
which card they're on. Press X (Files) to see each file. Cancel is
    selected first.
  • There is no undo and no Trash. Deleted files are gone.
  • Shared files aren't protected. If two games use the same file, for example two
playlists that list the same disc, deleting one deletes that file and the other game
stops working. Check the Files list before you confirm.
  • Your saves, states, and artwork are kept. Files beside a disc image that it doesn't
name, such as .sub or .sbi, stay, and folders are never removed.
  • The game's favorite, its Recents entry, and its per-game settings go with it.
  • Delete Game is offered for every system except arcade systems (including Neo
Geo, NAOMI, and Atomiswave, where deleting a parent ROM breaks its clones), Ports
(PortMaster manages those), systems a content pak adds, and EasyRPG. For DOS, Amiga,
and PC-98, Leaf warns that progress stored inside a writable game image goes with the
    image.
  • When it's done, Leaf tells you how many files it deleted, or which file it couldn't
delete. On a read-only card, Leaf offers the SD card repair instead.

A stick that rests at center

On some devices, a released analog stick kept reading as slightly pushed. Games could
see a small drift, and in DSperate a tap of MENU could stop working after you used
the stick or the device slept. Leaf now ignores the small offset a released stick
reports, so it reads as centered.

  • Without a stick calibration, Leaf uses a default range that every Miniloong Pocket 1
measured so far reaches, so the stick covers its full throw without calibrating.
  • A calibration you saved before keeps working, and gets the same treatment at rest.
  • After the device wakes, or the screen turns back on, games no longer see the stick
    where it was before.

In Joe's Calibrage, Calibrate now asks only for the range: roll the stick around
the edge, then press A to save. The centering step is gone, because your device
re-centers the stick every time it starts. Test Stick shows what games see, using
Leaf's mapping. With no profile saved, it shows Leaf's default and labels it
default.

Your battery, in games and on the light ring

Press MENU during a RetroArch game and the in-game menu now shows the status bar:
battery, clock, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and volume. It follows your Settings > Appearance >
Status Bar
choices, and the Performance and Shader pages show it too. The
Game Switcher stays without a bar.

Set Settings > Lighting > Mode to Battery Level and the light ring's color
follows your battery, in games as well as in the launcher:

  • Blue - 81 to 100%
  • Green - 61 to 80%
  • Orange - 41 to 60%
  • Red - 21 to 40%
  • Flashing red - 20% and below

The ring changes within about 5 seconds of the charge reaching a new band, and right
away when the device wakes from sleep. Charging uses the same colors. In this mode
Color reads Automatic and Speed reads Fixed, and Brightness still
works. Switch back to Static or any other mode and your chosen color returns.
Thanks to shaheedtait-cloud for asking for this
one.

The Static and Off modes now update the ring only when something changes, so
they cost next to nothing while the device sits idle.

Tiếng Việt and Русский

Settings > System > Language now offers Tiếng Việt and Русский.

  • Русский covers every screen, by Atanvaron and
    LVD14
    (Jawaka #213,
    #217,
    #227,
    #232,
    #236).
  • Tiếng Việt is 93 percent translated, by Nhân Nhanh Nhẩu from our Discord
    (Jawaka #211).
  • 中文 now covers Save Before Power Off, Resume Game on Boot, Hide Game,
Hidden Games, Delete Game, and Force Off Hold, by AlexL (Jawaka #214,
    #226,
    #230).
  • A few fonts can't draw these letters. While Vietnamese is on, Fredoka shows as
Nunito. While Russian is on, Space Grotesk, Lexend, Baloo 2, and
Fredoka do. The Font row names the font you actually see, and your own choice
comes back when you change the language.

In the other languages, the new screens in this release are in English for now. To
help finish a language, see Translating Leaf.

Saturn buttons that follow a Saturn pad

In YabaSanshiro, the default Saturn core, the face buttons now follow the shape of a
Saturn pad. Y, B, and A, left to right around your thumb, are the Saturn's
A, B, and C, and L1, X, and R1 are its X, Y, and Z. A, B, and C used to be on
B, A, and L1. L2 and R2 are still L and R.

  • If you remapped YabaSanshiro's buttons in RetroArch, your remap now applies on top of
the new layout, so check it.
  • YabaSanshiro Standalone keeps its own layout.

Pak Rat

  • Yabadabadoo is a new, experimental Sega Saturn core that needs this release, by
    ProRapSuperstarOriginalMaster. It
adds a core, not a system: install it from Pak Rat, then press X on a Saturn
game or on the Saturn system, choose Core, then Yabadabadoo
    (experimental)
. YabaSanshiro stays the default. Expect some games to glitch, run
    slowly, or not start.
    • It needs a real Saturn BIOS in BIOS/SATURN/: sega_101.bin, mpr-17933.bin, or
saturn_bios.bin. The Saturn BIOS option doesn't apply to it.
    • Its recompiler only exists for 32-bit ARM, so the pak brings its own 32-bit
RetroArch. Leaf controls it like its own: MENU opens Leaf's in-game menu, with
save states and their thumbnails, Reset, disc changes for .m3u games, and
Save & Quit, and the Game Switcher works. Your RetroArch settings apply to
it too, and it uses the same Saturn button layout as YabaSanshiro.
    • Recording and Bluetooth audio aren't available with it.
    • In-game saves go to Saves/Yabadabadoo/ and states to States/Yabadabadoo/,
      separate from YabaSanshiro's.
  • DSperate 3.0.3, by beebono, is already in Pak Rat
for Leaf 0.12 and later. It's much faster on heavy games, but save states from
    DSperate 2.x don't load in 3.0.3
. Your in-game saves carry over, so save in the game
    before you update it.
  • For pak developers: a content pak can now ship its own RetroArch for a core and still
get Leaf's in-game menu. See the
    LEAF-RA-1 contract.

Other improvements

  • If RetroArch is slow to answer when you open the in-game menu, the menu asks again
instead of showing Command: timeout and no save slots until you reopen it.
  • A long notice, such as why a game couldn't resume, now wraps onto a second line
    instead of being cut off.
  • Long titles at the top of a screen, such as a game's name in the in-game menu, end in
"..." instead of cutting a letter in half.
  • An imported game whose name repeated its own title after a dash now shows the title
    once.
  • Translated Color Temperature values in Settings > Display & Sound are no
    longer cut off.
