What's new in v0.14.0-beta.2

This beta adds Pokémon mini, shows your ROM subfolders as folders, and keeps each
second SD card's games, favorites, and playtime when you swap cards. Titles now sort
the way you'd expect, you can pin games to the top of a list, and Central Scrutinizer
can edit titles and descriptions from your browser. Leaf now speaks Korean and
Brazilian Portuguese. Six Pak Rat apps and content packs have updates too. It also
includes everything from beta.1: RPG Maker games, standalone emulators on a TV, German
and Dutch, a louder speaker, the Nintendo 64 d-pad, and Fun DraStic's cheat fixes.

Added in beta.2

Pokémon mini

Pokémon mini games now run on the PokeMini core.

  • Copy your .min games, loose or in .zip or .7z, into Roms/POKEMINI/. If your
collection comes from another handheld, Roms/POKE/, Roms/PKM/, and
    Roms/POKEMONMINI/ work too.
  • Scrape Artwork finds these games on ScreenScraper, and the system has its own art
in every home layout and a card in Central Scrutinizer.
  • Sharp Pixels and LCD Grid Fast are the recommended shaders.
  • The BIOS is optional, because the core has its own. If you have a dump of the real
one, name it bios.min and put it directly in BIOS/, not in a subfolder.
  • D-pad, A, and B are the same buttons. R1 is C, L1 is Shake,
for games like Pokémon Pinball Mini, and X is A with turbo. SELECT is the
console's Power button, so pressing it leaves a blank screen until you press it
    again.
  • The first time you start a game, it asks you to set the clock, as a new console did.
Your progress saves to Saves/PokeMini/ when you quit the game.

Thanks to nguyenthientam317 for asking for this.

Folders in your game lists

Turn on Settings > Games > Show Folders to see a system's ROM subfolders as rows.
It's off by default.

  • A opens a folder and B leaves it. Folders come first, then the games in that
    folder.
  • When you quit a game, you're back in the same folder on the same game.
  • A folder that's really one game's own folder, like an RPG Maker game or a Saturn game
with its tracks, shows as that game.
  • The same folder on both SD cards shows as one folder.
  • Favorites, Recents, search, the SELECT switcher, and the 5-Game picker stay flat.

Thanks to nguyenthientam317 for asking for this
too.

Second SD cards

Leaf now knows which second card is which.

  • Swapping second cards keeps each card's games, favorites, recents, playtime, per-game
settings, and hidden games. Leaf remembers the 8 most recent cards it isn't using.
Before, a different card's first scan deleted all of that for the previous card.
  • If both cards hold a game at the same path, each keeps its own playtime and settings.
  • Taking a card out removes its games from your lists, and they come back with the
card. Before, they stayed listed, couldn't launch, and Rescan Library couldn't
    clear them.
  • A reformatted card, or a copy onto a bigger card, keeps its data if it has at least 16
games and at least 90% of a sample of its files are still there. A smaller card
starts fresh. Cards that hold nearly all the same files, and cards cloned from one
    image, count as one card.
  • Central Scrutinizer's game counts and RAOfflineProxy's game picker leave out cards
that aren't in the slot. The picker needs RAOfflineProxy 0.1.2.

Thanks to Masque for reporting the games that stayed listed.

Sorting and pins

  • Titles now sort ignoring case and with numbers in order, so "Mega Man 2" comes before
"Mega Man 10", and a lowercase title no longer lands after "Zelda". This applies to a
system's list, Favorites, Hidden Games, and folder names.
  • Pin to Top in a game's Options menu moves it to the top of its system's list,
and the row becomes Unpin. Pins only order a system's own list, not Favorites,
    Recents, or search.

Edit your library in Central Scrutinizer

Central Scrutinizer 0.1.11 adds a Game Info card to each system's page.

  • Change a game's title and description, or reset either one. Your files are never
renamed, so saves keep working, and a later scrape doesn't overwrite your description.
  • Change many titles at once with find and replace, or strip region and version tags.
You see every change before it applies, with a checkbox for each.
  • Export titles and descriptions as CSV, edit them in a spreadsheet, and import them
    back through the same preview.
  • Undo reverses the last bulk change.
  • The Order tab pins games and folders and arranges them by drag or with buttons.
This is the only place to pin a folder or reorder your pins.

The launcher refreshes after each save, and it keeps the game you have selected, even
when titles change around it. The handheld only shows descriptions in the Grid home
layout.

Korean and Brazilian Portuguese

한국어 and Português (Brasil) are new in Settings > System > Language.

  • Korean is by cumasterns-cpu, and Leaf now ships a
font with Korean characters. It covers all but 7 strings.
  • Brazilian Portuguese is by muniz95, and covers 1,076 of
    1,743 strings so far.

AlexL made most of the remaining English labels
translatable, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth messages, Pak Rat, System Update, scraping,
and the delete dialogs, and translated them into 中文.
Eric Reinsmidt made every language file list every
string, so translators can see what's missing in their own file.

Translators: there are 662 new strings since beta.1. Nederlands (België) and
한국어 are nearly complete, and 中文 is at about 94%. Русский, Deutsch,
Español (México), Français, Tiếng Việt, and 日本語 show the new strings in
English until they're translated.

Fun DraStic follows your language

Fun DraStic's menu now uses your Leaf language, in Spanish or Chinese, and its MENU
LANGUAGE
row is gone. Any other language shows English. If you'd picked a language in
that row that differs from your Leaf language, the menu now follows Leaf. Thanks to
AlexL.

Pak Rat updates

These are already in Pak Rat, and all of them also install on Leaf v0.13.0. Your settings
and saves carry over.

  • DSperate 3.0.5 adds DSperate TATE, which stacks the two DS screens down the long
side of the screen, about a third bigger. Turn the device a quarter clockwise, or
the TV if you're playing on one. Mario Kart DS also runs more smoothly. By
beebono. With this beta, TATE also gets your
RetroAchievements account, and its controls stay put when you play on a TV.
  • Yabadabadoo 0.4.0 is built from upstream v0.4, by
    ProRapSuperstarOriginalMaster. Upstream
reports most 3D games run faster, with far better Die Hard Arcade, Fighters Megamix,
Virtua Fighter 2, and Shining Force III. CHD games play CD audio from the right place,
and Reset no longer leaks memory.
  • RAOfflineProxy 0.1.2 leaves games on a missing second card out of Prepare one
    game
, and explains what to do when it has no token, including turning off Hardcore
    Mode.
  • Disco Boy 0.2.2 skips a Music folder on a second card that isn't mounted, so it
no longer treats the card's empty mount folder as a music source.
  • Nimbus 0.2.0 adds a 12 or 24-hour clock, air quality, and a feels-like range in the
    forecast. By Geekstrada.
  • Syncthing 0.1.1 makes it easier to connect to an existing Syncthing hub, and resets
now use two controller confirmations instead of typed phrases.

Smaller changes

  • Square cover art: box art in your lists, Recents, Favorites, and search is now
square. To get the rounded look back, turn on Settings > Appearance > Round Cover
    Art
    .
  • The Favorites tab no longer draws a star on each row, since every game there is one.
  • Options menu rows are closer together, so longer menus show more before scrolling.
  • Nintendo 64: the Rice video plugin now caps its texture cache at 32 MB. Paper Mario's
fortune-telling scene ran the device out of memory and closed the game. Thanks to
    AlexL.
  • Removing a Pak Rat app during a library scan no longer says the library refresh failed.

Included from beta.1

RPG Maker games

RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 games run on the EasyRPG core, by the
EasyRPG team. The EasyRPG core in every Leaf release since
June couldn't load on the device, so these games never started.

  • Copy each game's folder, as it comes, into Roms/EASYRPG/. A game is a folder
with an RPG_RT.ldb inside, such as Roms/EASYRPG/The Linear Game/RPG_RT.ldb.
  • Each game is named after its folder, in the launcher and in the in-game menu.
Before, every folder game was called RPG_RT.
  • Art goes in Images/EASYRPG/ under the folder's name, for example
    Images/EASYRPG/The Linear Game.png.
  • Scrape Artwork searches ScreenScraper by the folder's name. If that misses, it
tries once more without a version at the end, so "Dragon Destiny v1.2" also tries
"Dragon Destiny". Each game saves its own art.
  • Music in Ogg Vorbis, MP3, and Opus plays, besides WAV and MIDI.
  • Maps run at full speed, and MENU opens the in-game menu without closing the
    game.

Thanks to nguyenthientam317 for reporting
that these games didn't work.

Standalone emulators on a TV

Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and Saturn games run in standalone emulators that drive the
screen themselves. They used to assume the handheld's screen, so on a TV the picture
came out turned on its side.

  • Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 games are upright and use the TV's mode. With HDMI
    Output
on 4:3 they're centered, and on Stretch they fill the screen.
  • Saturn games are upright on the TV.
  • With Settings > Display & Sound > HDMI Output on Off and a cable plugged
in, these games stay on the built-in screen. Before, they moved to the TV, and the
device could stay black after you quit.
  • When you quit one of these games, Leaf sets the display back the way HDMI
    Output
has it. Before, the launcher could come back squeezed or cropped on the
    TV.
  • If you plug in or unplug the cable during one of these games, the game stays where
it is, and Leaf switches when you quit.
  • Screenshots and the paused game behind the in-game menu are upright on a TV. They
used to come out sideways and scrambled.
  • Unplugging the TV during a RetroArch game no longer crashes RetroArch. It closes
the game within a few seconds and keeps your in-game save. Before, anything saved
in the game since you started it was lost.

Thanks to pixelmentia for reporting the sideways
picture.

German and Dutch

Deutsch and Nederlands (België) are new in Settings > System > Language.

Some labels used to stay in English in every language. They're now translated where a
language has them: the Options menu for a game or a system, the search screens, Pak
Rat's statuses and messages, System Update, the Simple layout's section names,
and several Settings values. Messages from scraping, updates, and Pak Rat are
translated too where they don't carry a file path or an error.

Louder speaker

At 100%, the speaker and headphones now play as loud as the stock firmware at its
maximum, about 4.4 dB louder than before.

Leaf now saves your volume on the stock firmware's own scale. If you switch back to
the stock launcher, it keeps the volume you had in Leaf. Before, 100% came back there
as 10 of 14. Exact 5% steps also survive a restart, where 55% used to come back as
60%. Your current volume carries over the first time this beta starts.

Thanks to codecme47 for reporting the low volume.

Scraping a renamed game

If you renamed a game with Display Name in its Options menu and ScreenScraper
doesn't recognize its file, Scrape Artwork now tries that name once before giving
up. The art is still saved under the file's name, so it shows as before.

RetroArch fixes

  • MENU + button hotkeys no longer pass the button to the game for one frame. On
Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and GBA games running on gambatte or gpSP, fast-forward on
MENU + R2 now turns off on the first press.
  • Pressing MENU in a Game & Watch game no longer closes it.

Nintendo 64 d-pad

In the standalone Nintendo 64 emulator, Input Mode now works on this device. It
used to change nothing here.

  • D-Pad, the default, sends the N64 d-pad. Joystick steers the N64 analog
stick with the d-pad, for games that only read the stick. Press MENU during a
game and change it in Options > Controls > Input Mode, or bind Options >
    Shortcuts > Toggle Input Mode
to a button. Each game keeps its own mode.
  • You can bind a d-pad direction to any N64 button, such as the C buttons. In
Options > Controls, pick C-Up, press A, then press up on the d-pad. In
D-Pad mode that direction then sends C-Up instead of the d-pad, and R2 + X
still works too. In Joystick mode the d-pad steers the stick and these bindings
    rest.

Thanks to AlexL for this one.

Fun DraStic cheats

Fun DraStic's Cheats page reads its cheat database properly now.

  • Far more cheats show up. The bundled database lists about 145,000 cheats, up from
about 89,000, and 44 games that showed none now list theirs, such as Dragon Quest
IX and Final Fantasy Tactics A2.
  • Turning a cheat on applies its codes. About 36,000 cheats loaded no codes before
    and did nothing.
  • Cheats with Chinese names show, in every language.
  • Long cheats keep all their codes instead of stopping at 32.
  • On the Leaf theme, an enabled cheat's name and its ON stay readable.

Thanks to AlexL for reporting the missing Chinese cheats.

New in Pak Rat: J2ME

J2ME plays the Java games that phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and
others ran before smartphones. It adds a J2ME system with its own Roms/J2ME/
folder, the FreeJ2ME-Plus core, and the Java runtime that core needs, so there's
nothing else to install. Install it from Pak Rat, then copy your .jar games
(or .kjx) into Roms/J2ME/ and rescan.

FreeJ2ME-Plus is by AShiningRay,
recompileorg, hex007,
and the FreeJ2ME-Plus contributors.
The pak works on Leaf v0.13.0 too, so you don't need this beta for it. See the
J2ME page for the controls and for games you
touch the screen in.

Tester focus

  • Second cards: swap between two cards with games on them, then check favorites,
playtime, and per-game settings on each. Pull a card and boot without it. Try a
reformatted card, or one copied onto a bigger card. Going back to an older Leaf after
swapping cards hasn't had a full test, so tell us what happens if you do.
  • Show Folders: turn it on with your own folder layout, on both cards if you have
two. Launch from deep in a folder and quit. Tell us about any folder that should have
    shown as one game.
  • Pokémon mini: play a few games, loose and in .zip. Check saves after you quit,
L1 in Pinball, and both recommended shaders.
  • Sorting and pins: check your lists sort as you expect, especially titles with
numbers. Pin and unpin some games, then swap the second card.
  • Central Scrutinizer: edit a few titles and descriptions, try a bulk change with
Undo, round-trip a CSV through a spreadsheet, and arrange pins on the Order tab
with touch and with a mouse.
  • Korean and Brazilian Portuguese: read through the screens you use, and tell us about
wording or anything that doesn't fit.
  • Fun DraStic: set Leaf to Spanish or Chinese and open its menu.
  • Nintendo 64: the Rice change applies to every game on Rice, the default. Play a few
games for a while, and tell us if textures go missing or a game slows down.
  • RPG Maker: copy a few of your own games in as folders. Check the names, the art,
the music, saving in the game, and MENU. Try Scrape Artwork on them and tell
us which ones it finds. If a game needs the RPG Maker RTP, put it in
BIOS/rtp/2000/ or BIOS/rtp/2003/ and tell us if the game finds it.
  • TV: play Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and Saturn games on a TV with 4:3 and
Stretch, and with HDMI Output on Off and the cable in. Unplug the cable
during a RetroArch game after saving in the game, then check the save is there.
  • Volume: compare the loudness with the stock firmware. If you switch between
Leaf and the stock launcher, check your volume stays the same.
  • Hotkeys: try fast-forward on MENU + R2 in Game Boy games, and your other
    MENU hotkeys.
  • RetroArch: RetroArch brings its own copy of SDL since beta.1. Play a few games on
other cores, with and without a shader, and tell us if anything changed.

Expected, not faults: most languages show many strings in English until they're
translated. After you scrape a game, its box art may not show until the launcher
restarts, for example after you launch and quit a game. Descriptions only show in the
Grid home layout. Folders can only be pinned in Central Scrutinizer. Below 16 games, a
reformatted second card starts fresh. Fun DraStic's translated menus use its bitmap
font for Latin letters instead of the Leaf theme's font. The Nintendo 64 Rice plugin's
HQ4X filter renders wrongly on this device, as it did before. Yabadabadoo is
experimental. The EasyRPG core can't make save states, so use each game's own save
menu. RPG Maker games whose scripts do heavy text work every frame, such as some Maniac
Patch games, can run below full speed. On a TV, some Saturn games aren't exactly 4:3.
The launcher still restarts for a second or two when you plug in or unplug the TV. If
you go back to v0.13.0, it may read your saved volume as louder than you set it.

This beta includes everything in stable Leaf v0.13.0 and v0.14.0-beta.1.

Already running a compatible Leaf install? Open System Update, set Update Channel
to Beta, then check for and install the update.

For a fresh install, extract leaf-mlp1-sd-v0.14.0-beta.2.zip to the root of a FAT32
or ext4 SD card and boot with it inserted. Your games, saves, and states are left alone.
