What's new in v0.14.0-beta.1
This beta runs RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 games, with music, and names each one after its
folder. Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and Saturn games now come out upright on a TV, and
unplugging the TV during a RetroArch game keeps your save. Leaf speaks German and
Dutch, its speaker gets as loud as the stock firmware's, and Fun DraStic finds and
applies far more cheats. The Nintendo 64 d-pad can steer the stick or act as C
buttons. In Pak Rat, the new J2ME pak plays Java phone games.
RPG Maker games
RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 games run on the EasyRPG core, by the
EasyRPG team. The EasyRPG core in every Leaf release since
June couldn't load on the device, so these games never started.
- Copy each game's folder, as it comes, into
Roms/EASYRPG/. A game is a folder
with anRPG_RT.ldbinside, such asRoms/EASYRPG/The Linear Game/RPG_RT.ldb. - Each game is named after its folder, in the launcher and in the in-game menu.
Before, every folder game was called RPG_RT. - Art goes in
Images/EASYRPG/under the folder's name, for example
Images/EASYRPG/The Linear Game.png. - Scrape Artwork searches ScreenScraper by the folder's name. If that misses, it
tries once more without a version at the end, so "Dragon Destiny v1.2" also tries
"Dragon Destiny". Each game saves its own art. - Music in Ogg Vorbis, MP3, and Opus plays, besides WAV and MIDI.
- Maps run at full speed, and MENU opens the in-game menu without closing the
game.
Thanks to nguyenthientam317 for reporting
that these games didn't work.
Standalone emulators on a TV
Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and Saturn games run in standalone emulators that drive the
screen themselves. They used to assume the handheld's screen, so on a TV the picture
came out turned on its side.
- Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 games are upright and use the TV's mode. With HDMI
Output on 4:3 they're centered, and on Stretch they fill the screen. - Saturn games are upright on the TV.
- With Settings > Display & Sound > HDMI Output on Off and a cable plugged
in, these games stay on the built-in screen. Before, they moved to the TV, and the
device could stay black after you quit. - When you quit one of these games, Leaf sets the display back the way HDMI
Output has it. Before, the launcher could come back squeezed or cropped on the
TV. - If you plug in or unplug the cable during one of these games, the game stays where
it is, and Leaf switches when you quit. - Screenshots and the paused game behind the in-game menu are upright on a TV. They
used to come out sideways and scrambled. - Unplugging the TV during a RetroArch game no longer crashes RetroArch. It closes
the game within a few seconds and keeps your in-game save. Before, anything saved
in the game since you started it was lost.
Thanks to pixelmentia for reporting the sideways
picture.
German and Dutch
Deutsch and Nederlands (België) are new in Settings > System > Language.
Dutch covers every screen. German covers everything that was in v0.13.0, and shows
the labels below in English for now.
Some labels stayed in English in every language. They're now translated: the
Options menu for a game or a system, the search screens, Pak Rat's statuses and
messages, System Update, the Simple layout's section names, and several
Settings values. Messages from scraping, updates, and Pak Rat are translated too
where they don't carry a file path or an error.
- Русский covers every screen again, reviewed by
Atanvaron and LVD14
(Jawaka #245). - 中文 translates all the new labels, by AlexL
(Jawaka #247).
Translators: there are 209 new strings. Español (México), Français, Tiếng Việt,
日本語, and Deutsch show them in English until they're translated.
Louder speaker
At 100%, the speaker and headphones now play as loud as the stock firmware at its
maximum, about 4.4 dB louder than before.
Leaf now saves your volume on the stock firmware's own scale. If you switch back to
the stock launcher, it keeps the volume you had in Leaf. Before, 100% came back there
as 10 of 14. Exact 5% steps also survive a restart, where 55% used to come back as
60%. Your current volume carries over the first time this beta starts.
Thanks to codecme47 for reporting the low volume.
Scraping a renamed game
If you renamed a game with Display Name in its Options menu and ScreenScraper
doesn't recognize its file, Scrape Artwork now tries that name once before giving
up. The art is still saved under the file's name, so it shows as before.
RetroArch fixes
- MENU + button hotkeys no longer pass the button to the game for one frame. On
Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and GBA games running on gambatte or gpSP, fast-forward on
MENU + R2 now turns off on the first press. - Pressing MENU in a Game & Watch game no longer closes it.
Nintendo 64 d-pad
In the standalone Nintendo 64 emulator, Input Mode now works on this device. It
used to change nothing here.
- D-Pad, the default, sends the N64 d-pad. Joystick steers the N64 analog
stick with the d-pad, for games that only read the stick. Press MENU during a
game and change it in Options > Controls > Input Mode, or bind Options >
Shortcuts > Toggle Input Mode to a button. Each game keeps its own mode. - You can bind a d-pad direction to any N64 button, such as the C buttons. In
Options > Controls, pick C-Up, press A, then press up on the d-pad. In
D-Pad mode that direction then sends C-Up instead of the d-pad, and R2 + X
still works too. In Joystick mode the d-pad steers the stick and these bindings
rest.
Thanks to AlexL for this one.
Fun DraStic cheats
Fun DraStic's Cheats page reads its cheat database properly now.
- Far more cheats show up. The bundled database lists about 145,000 cheats, up from
about 89,000, and 44 games that showed none now list theirs, such as Dragon Quest
IX and Final Fantasy Tactics A2. - Turning a cheat on applies its codes. About 36,000 cheats loaded no codes before
and did nothing. - Cheats with Chinese names show, in every language.
- Long cheats keep all their codes instead of stopping at 32.
- On the Leaf theme, an enabled cheat's name and its ON stay readable.
Thanks to AlexL for reporting the missing Chinese cheats.
New in Pak Rat: J2ME
J2ME plays the Java games that phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and
others ran before smartphones. It adds a J2ME system with its own Roms/J2ME/
folder, the FreeJ2ME-Plus core, and the Java runtime that core needs, so there's
nothing else to install. Install it from Pak Rat, then copy your .jar games
(or .kjx) into Roms/J2ME/ and rescan.
FreeJ2ME-Plus is by AShiningRay,
recompileorg, hex007,
and the FreeJ2ME-Plus contributors.
The pak works on Leaf v0.13.0 too, so you don't need this beta for it. See the
J2ME page for the controls and for games you
touch the screen in.
Tester focus
- RPG Maker: copy a few of your own games in as folders. Check the names, the art,
the music, saving in the game, and MENU. Try Scrape Artwork on them and tell
us which ones it finds. If a game needs the RPG Maker RTP, put it in
BIOS/rtp/2000/orBIOS/rtp/2003/and tell us if the game finds it. - TV: play Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and Saturn games on a TV with 4:3 and
Stretch, and with HDMI Output on Off and the cable in. Unplug the cable
during a RetroArch game after saving in the game, then check the save is there. - Volume: compare the loudness with the stock firmware. If you switch between
Leaf and the stock launcher, check your volume stays the same. - German and Dutch: read through the screens you use and tell us about wording or
leftover English. - Display Name: rename a game that doesn't find art, then scrape it again.
- Hotkeys: try fast-forward on MENU + R2 in Game Boy games, and your other
MENU hotkeys. - Nintendo 64: the standalone emulator was rebuilt for this beta. Play a few games
as usual, switch Input Mode in some, and bind a d-pad direction to a C button. - Fun DraStic: turn on a few cheats, especially long ones and ones with Chinese
names. - RetroArch: RetroArch was rebuilt for this beta and now brings its own copy of
SDL. Play a few games on other cores, with and without a shader, and tell us if
anything changed.
Expected, not faults: the 209 new strings are in English in Español (México),
Français, Tiếng Việt, 日本語, and Deutsch. The EasyRPG core can't
make save states, so use each game's own save menu. RPG Maker games whose scripts do
heavy text work every frame, such as some Maniac Patch games, can run below full
speed. On a TV, some Saturn games aren't exactly 4:3. The launcher still restarts
for a second or two when you plug in or unplug the TV. If you go back to v0.13.0, it
may read your saved volume as louder than you set it.
This beta includes everything in stable Leaf v0.13.0.
Already running a compatible Leaf install? Open System Update, set Update Channel
to Beta, then check for and install the update.
For a fresh install, extract leaf-mlp1-sd-v0.14.0-beta.1.zip to the root of a FAT32
or ext4 SD card and boot with it inserted. Your games, saves, and states are left alone.
