What's new in v0.12.0-beta.4

This beta adds Japanese, finishes Mexican Spanish, and gives the Time Zone picker a place
for every time zone. Recovery now puts the stock boot animation back.

Japanese

Leaf can now draw itself in 日本語. Pick it in Settings > System > Language.

It uses a Japanese font, so kanji take their Japanese forms rather than the Chinese ones
(直 and 骨 are easy ones to compare). The font still covers every Chinese character the
Chinese one does, so Chinese game titles keep showing while Leaf is in Japanese. While
Japanese is active, the Font row reads Leaf Han Sans JP.

The translation is new and about two thirds done, so plenty of lines are still English.

Mexican Spanish is complete

Español (México) is now fully translated, thanks to Eric394. A few of the longer
strings were shortened so they fit their buttons and hints.

Languages are in order

The Language list shows English first, then every other language in alphabetical order
by its own name. It used to follow whatever order the files happened to load in.

Shader names translate

The shader picker's names, descriptions, and notes now follow your language like the rest
of Leaf. They were always English before.

Settings labels have room

A long label beside a short value used to be cut off halfway across the row, even with
most of the row empty. Labels now use whatever room the value leaves. Spanish Reset
RetroArch Config
was the worst case. That row also drops its Left and Right arrows,
since it is an action rather than a setting you can cycle.

Every time zone

Settings > System > Time Zone used to stop at Sydney, which left New Zealand with no
way to get its clock right. We got you, Kiwis. It now lists 40 places covering every
whole-hour offset from UTC-12 to UTC+14, plus the half-hour and quarter-hour ones. Each
row is a place rather than a bare offset, so daylight saving follows on its own: pick New
Zealand once and the clock changes with the seasons. The zone you had picked before is
kept.

Iran (UTC+3:30) is left out on purpose. The time zone data in the device firmware still
applies daylight saving that Iran abolished in 2022, so its clock would be an hour wrong
for half the year.

Recovery restores the stock boot animation

Running the recovery build to go back to stock LoongOS left the device booting with
Leaf's animation. Recovery now puts the stock animation back. A device that was already
showing the stock animation is left as it is.

Testing notes

  • Japanese: switch to 日本語 and look around the launcher, Settings, and the in-game
menu. Untranslated lines staying English is expected; a line in the previous language
is a bug worth reporting. If you read Japanese, tell us anything that looks like a
Chinese character form rather than a Japanese one.
  • Chinese titles under Japanese: if you have games with Chinese names, check they
still display with Leaf set to Japanese.
  • Mexican Spanish: go through Settings and the in-game menu and report any line that
is still English or runs out of room.
  • Time Zone: pick your own zone and check the clock. New Zealand and Chatham Islands
    users especially.
  • Recovery: if you have a spare card, run the recovery build and check the stock
animation plays on the next boot.

Expected, not faults: Japanese is about two thirds translated, so many lines are still
English. French and Chinese are unchanged from beta.3. Iran is missing from Time Zone on
purpose. The Font row is locked while Japanese or Chinese is active, because none of the
regular Leaf fonts can draw those characters.

This beta includes everything in stable Leaf v0.11.0 and v0.12.0-beta.1 through beta.3.

Already running a compatible Leaf install? Open System Update, set Update Channel
to Beta, then check for and install the update.

For a fresh install, extract leaf-mlp1-sd-v0.12.0-beta.4.zip to the root of a FAT32
or ext4 SD card and boot with it inserted. Your games, saves, and states are left alone.
