What's new in v0.12.0-beta.2
This beta brings themes to Pak Rat, splits rumble into separate switches for the
interface and for games, and teaches Leaf to notice and repair an SD card that has
turned read-only. It also fixes games that flashed black and returned to the menu, shows
why a launch failed in every home layout, and draws on-screen banners in Leaf's own font
and language.
Themes in Pak Rat
Pak Rat now has a Themes section. Open Pak Rat and press Y to switch between
Apps and Themes. Each theme shows a preview, its author and license. Press A to
install it, and Leaf offers to apply it straight away. Pak Rat keeps the themes it
installed up to date, and Y uninstalls one. Uninstalling your current theme switches
you to no theme.
- If you already have a hand-made theme folder with the same name, Pak Rat asks before
replacing it. - The
Themesfolder holds up to 32 themes. Pak Rat tells you when it is full instead of
installing a theme that would never appear. - A theme can now give the Apps tile its own label in Grid View
(grid/labels/_apps.png).
Anyone can share a theme. Browse published themes in the
Theme gallery, and see
Submit a theme to send in your own through
a form on GitHub. The themes guide now covers
wordmarks, Cover Flow icons, and every size limit.
Rumble has two switches
Rumble is now UI Rumble and Game Rumble, with one Strength setting for
both, in Settings > Controls & Feedback. UI Rumble is every tap the interface makes,
and Game Rumble is rumble inside games. Your earlier settings carry over: if rumble was
off, both switches start off.
Read-only SD cards are detected and repaired
When a card hits a file system error, the device turns it read-only, and before this
build Leaf failed in scattered ways: scraper errors, stuck save states, and a Save & Quit
that never quit. Now:
- Leaf shows a warning with Later and Repair SD card, and an amber
SD read-only badge in the status bar. - Starting a game on a read-only card asks first, with Play anyway or Cancel.
Save states are refused while the card is read-only, so you don't lose progress to a
save that can't be written. - Repair SD card needs the charger connected and no game running. Leaf restarts,
checks and repairs the card before it starts, and shows what was fixed, with an offer
to Scrape missing artwork. - Settings > General > SD Cards lists both cards with repair, check, and unmount. It
replaces Unmount Secondary SD. - Central Scrutinizer reports a read-only or full card clearly on uploads and file
operations instead of a generic error.
Repair works on FAT32 cards.
Games no longer flash black and return
Games and ports could flash black and drop back to the menu when Leaf's session log
could not be written. Every emulator launcher now carries on regardless, and the log is
rotated at each boot and kept to a sensible size.
When a launch does fail, Leaf now says why in every home layout, including Grid and
Cover Flow, with a short notice such as a missing BIOS or ports launcher exited (status 3). It disappears after a few seconds.
Also improved
- On-screen banners, such as volume, brightness, and the PICO-8 exit prompt, use Leaf's
font and follow your language, so they appear in Chinese when Leaf is set to 中文. - Settings rows that are simply on or off now show a switch, so the whole choice is
visible at a glance. That covers the Status Bar rows and the Wi-Fi, ADB and Bluetooth
rows, which now read On or Off rather than naming the button's action. Auto Sleep's
first choice reads Never instead of Off. - When a pak adds an emulator for a system, that system's default core is still used
unless you chose another. Pressing MENU in an emulator a pak adds now asks
Return to Leaf? first, the way native PICO-8 does, so one accidental press
doesn't end your game. Those emulators also get the same calibrated controller Leaf's
own emulators use. - Central Scrutinizer's file browser previews images.
Tester focus
- Themes: open Pak Rat, press Y, and try installing, applying, updating, and
uninstalling themes as they are published. If you make themes, submit one. - Rumble: check that your earlier rumble settings carried over, then try UI Rumble
and Game Rumble on their own. - Read-only cards: if a card turns read-only, try Repair SD card with the charger
connected and tell us what the result screen showed. Please don't damage a card on
purpose. - Launch notices: if a game fails to start, check that a notice explains why in
your home layout. - Settings switches: check the Status Bar, Network and Bluetooth rows, and that
turning Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on and off still works from them. - Saturn: if you play Saturn games, check which emulator they start in (see below).
- Updating: install over an existing card and confirm your themes, games, saves, and
settings are untouched.
Expected, not faults: Pak Rat's Themes section says there are no themes yet until the
first ones are published. Saturn games you never picked a core for now start in
RetroArch's YabaSanshiro, Leaf's default Saturn emulator, instead of the standalone
YabaSanshiro. The two keep separate saves and states, so choose the standalone again
in the game's Core option to keep playing a save made there. The first boot after
updating starts a fresh session log and keeps the previous one as a backup.
This beta includes everything in stable Leaf v0.11.0 and v0.12.0-beta.1.
Already running a compatible Leaf install? Open System Update, set Update Channel
to Beta, then check for and install the update.
For a fresh install, extract leaf-mlp1-sd-v0.12.0-beta.2.zip to the root of a FAT32
or ext4 SD card and boot with it inserted. Your games, saves, and states are left alone.
