Important
The extension keeps working with older Trilium versions. A few features also need Trilium v0.107.0 or newer (not yet released, however a nightly can be used if desired), marked with π Trilium v0.107 below. Saving a PDF is the only one that refuses to run on an older server; it asks you to update Trilium instead.
For Chrome instructions: https://docs.triliumnotes.org/user-guide/setup/web-clipper#for-chrome
The Firefox the instructions are out of date, there the process is just to click on the file and it will immediately ask whether to install it.
β¨ What's new
π See what you save before saving it
The popup is redesigned around a preview card: the note's title (editable), the website, and a preview of the content.
- Modes, offered only when they apply: Selection when text is selected, Page when the page can be read, PDF on a PDF tab, and Bookmark always. The card opens on the most specific one.
- Article or whole page. Page mode has an Article / Whole page switch. Whole page keeps galleries, dashboards and card grids that article extraction would trim away (#9611). The keyboard shortcut and the context menu save the article, or the whole page when there is no article, instead of failing.
- A note about the page in every mode (#5350). A text box at the top of the card holds your note. It is placed above the clipped content as a note admonition. Ctrl+Enter saves from any field.
- Bookmark replaces "Link with a note". The title is a field of its own instead of being guessed from your note's first sentence, so titles no longer break on "e.g." or "v1.2".
- Code in the preview is styled like the share theme and set in JetBrains Mono (#2092). Embedded YouTube videos show as a chip instead of a player that cannot run.
- The outcome stays in the popup. "Saving to Triliumβ¦", then Open note (and Close saved tabs after saving tabs), or the reason it failed. This also works where no notification can appear on the page: browser pages, extension stores and Firefox's PDF viewer.
- Pages the extension cannot read say so and offer what still works, instead of failing silently.
π Better page extraction
- Pages are now read with Defuddle instead of Readability. It keeps the lead image that news sites put outside the article body and drops duplicate responsive copies of the same picture (#2621).
- The extractor loads only when a page is actually read, not on every page you visit. The script that runs on each page is now 11 kB.
- Saving works in tabs that were open before the extension was installed or updated.
πΈ Full-page screenshots
A new Full page capture, available from the popup, the context menu and a bindable shortcut.
- Fixed headers, cookie banners and chat buttons appear once, not in every slice. Sticky elements stay in place, and scrollbars are left out.
- Long pages are saved as several images of at most 8,192 px each, up to 100 captures. If a page is cut off, the clipper says so.
- In Firefox, the page is captured without scrolling through it.
- Screenshots are shrunk by width only, so a tall page is no longer squeezed into a thin strip. π Trilium v0.107
- The capture buttons are renamed after what they capture: Area, Visible, Full page and All tabs.
π Save PDFs (#1209)
On a tab showing a PDF, the popup offers a PDF mode. The PDF is downloaded with your cookies (so a PDF behind a login works) and saved as a file note, which Trilium opens in its PDF viewer and indexes for search. The "save whole page" shortcut and context menu entry also save the PDF. π Trilium v0.107
π·οΈ Page metadata
Clips now carry the page's metadata as labels. You can search for them, show them as table columns, and they are updated (not duplicated) when the same page is clipped again (#802).
| Label | From | Saved on |
|---|---|---|
#pageDescription
| the page's description meta tags | every clip of the page: page, selection, screenshot, image, bookmark |
#pageAuthor
| meta tags, schema.org data, the byline | page clips |
#publishedDate / #modifiedDate
| meta tags, with the article's own date as a fallback | page clips |
Description and author can be edited in the popup before saving.
ποΈ In Trilium π Trilium v0.107
- Clip icons: clippings show an icon for what was clipped (paperclip for clippings, globe for pages, bookmark for bookmarks, window for tabs). Your own
#iconClassstill wins. - "Web clip" badge: the badge opens a panel with the page's address, description, author and dates.
- Saved tabs become link previews: when Autogenerate link previews is on, each tab is saved as a link mention with its title and favicon, taken from the browser rather than fetched again.
- Embedded YouTube videos in a clipped page are kept as link previews with title, channel and thumbnail (#1449). Before, they disappeared entirely.
π οΈ Improvements
- Errors are explained. Every failure now ends in a notification that says what to start, check or update, instead of nothing happening.
- Failed image downloads are reported. The notification counts the images that could not be downloaded, and those images keep pointing at the website so they still show.
- Two-factor authentication: the options page has an Authentication code field, and the error says whether the password or the code was wrong. π Trilium v0.107 (for the distinct error)
- The popup is rebuilt in the Next theme, with a status bar at the bottom for the connection and shortcuts drawn as key caps.
- The Save tabs and Full page commands can be bound to a shortcut from the browser's extension shortcut settings.
π Bug fixes
These were problems in v1.1.1 and earlier.
Connecting
- Logging in failed with "Incorrect credentials" on servers with TOTP / two-factor authentication enabled (#9286).
- The popup kept switching from "connected" back to "searching" (#1503).
- A server URL with a trailing
**/**did not work, by @bartv2. - The options page named the wrong desktop port (37740 instead of 37840).
Saving
- Failed saves were silent: for example, Ctrl+Shift+S with the desktop app closed did nothing at all.
- Cropped screenshots failed to upload in some versions of Chrome (#8528).
- A cropped area was captured wrong when the drag crossed back over its starting point.
- The save tabs shortcut was never registered, so it could not be bound.
- Saving tabs failed entirely when one tab had no URL (for example, one still loading), and HTML in tab titles was saved as markup.
- Every save of tabs after the first was appended to the first tabs note instead of creating a new one. π Trilium v0.107
- Clipping a page that was already clipped cloned its note back into the inbox, even after you had moved it elsewhere, by @contributor. π Trilium v0.107
Content
- Images that could not be downloaded were saved as broken images, and an HTTP error page could be saved in place of a picture, while the notification reported success.
- Lazy-loaded images in a selection were saved as empty placeholders.
- URL-encoded inline images (such as SVGs) were saved as garbage (#2621).
mailto:,tel:,ftp:andmagnet:links were turned into broken web addresses.- Clips' dates were an hour off in time zones without a whole-hour offset (India, for example).
#publishedDateand#modifiedDatecould be one day off from the date the page states.- Label values containing
&were stored as&. π Trilium v0.107
π§° Under the hood
- The popup and the options page are rewritten in Preact, sharing the Trilium app's stylesheets.
- The extension now has a test suite, held at 100% line and branch coverage in CI.
- New
scriptingpermission, used to load the extractor on demand. It shows no install warning in Chrome or Firefox, so you are not asked to approve the extension again. - The clipper protocol moves to 1.1. Older extensions keep working with new Trilium versions, and the new extension keeps working with older ones, except for saving PDFs.
