Reaper v3.7.0-beta — RT-BE88U

pre-release2 hours ago

v3.7.0 — security review: kernel privilege checks, root-only files and keys, a page token on every save, hardened binaries; USB 3 write levers; list addresses on the Dreadwatch and Wallguard rows

Everything in v3.6.5 is included. Both lines carry the same changes: RT-BE96U, RT-BE86U, RT-BE88U and GT-BE98 Pro on
3006.102.10; GT-BE98, GT-BE19000, BQ16 and BQ16 Pro on 3006.102.8.

  • A full code review of the firmware, its kernel and a surface pass over the closed programs. The fixes below are
its outcome; the items it did not change are listed with their reasons in the review record. Highest priorities fixed
    first, more to come.
  • Kernel: privileged interfaces answer only privileged callers. The kernel's nvram channel, the multicast-snooping
control, the packet-flow device and the /proc command consoles refuse a process without administrator rights, and
the lengths they read are bounded by what was sent. Five stable fixes for the 4.19 kernel: CVE-2023-42752,
CVE-2024-36904, CVE-2024-56631, CVE-2024-41012 and CVE-2024-47685. Port trigger, the URL / keyword filter and the
repeater-mode DNS redirect get locking, bounds and copy fixes.
  • Files, keys and folders are no longer open to every process on the router. The kernel nvram file, device nodes,
lock and mount folders, the Wi-Fi and AiMesh configuration files, certificates and keys (also after a restore),
PPPoE / PPTP / L2TP and WireGuard credentials, SSH keys, the USB share-permission files and several working folders
are root-only or read-only for others. The kernel log and kernel addresses are readable by root only. A new file
that names no mode is created 0644, not 0666.
  • Every settings save carries the page's token. A save from the web pages now carries the per-boot request token
that every Reaper page already used, and a browser request without it is refused; the ASUS app and scripts are not
affected. If a page ever saves nothing, the system log says apply without the page token refused.
  • Secrets stay out of page source. RADIUS shared secrets, the WPS PIN and the MLO network's password are no longer
written into the pages; the PIN and the password are read when you press Show.
  • Hardened builds. httpd, rc, infosvr and dnsmasq are position-independent with full RELRO; httpd, infosvr and
dnsmasq are also built with FORTIFY.
  • Web interface fixes. The browser cross-site refusal also covers the HTTPS port and the WAN-detection and scan
pages; the IPsec certificate upload sets only its own setting; byte-range downloads are answered as ranges; the
firmware download is checked in a private folder before it is used; the password change no longer writes the new
    password to a temporary file.
  • Gatekeeper's waiting page with an HTTPS-only web interface. A held device's web check reached a closed port, so
the waiting page never showed. The router now runs a plain-HTTP instance for that page only; every other request to
    it is sent to HTTPS.
  • Wallguard keeps a good list when a provider answers with an error page. A download is parsed before it replaces
the list in use; one with no names, or mostly lines that are not a list, is refused and the previous copy kept.
  • Encrypted DNS: one host can no longer hold every connection slot with connections that never finish the TLS
    handshake.
  • The Windows Network Map no longer lists the router. Its responder (LLTD) is not started.
  • The kernel banner names no build machine (/proc/version reads reaper@reaper).
  • USB 3 write-speed levers, off by default. Five module parameters set from the reaper_usb3_* settings, for
A/B tests of the write speed on BCM4912 / BCM4916 models; nothing changes unless one is set.
  • Dreadwatch and Wallguard show each built-in list's address on its row, so a list can be read before it is
ticked. Save downloads a list ticked for the first time. The DNS-bypass banner also recognises VPN Director's
Exclusive DNS. Warden exempts the IPv6 prefix of every LAN network, Encrypted DNS exempts AiMesh nodes, and the
Dreadwatch device counters list the 100 busiest devices.

Two flashable images: + AI Advisor (default) and Standard (noMCP, all AI components compiled out entirely). Flash the *_nand_squashfs.pkgtb via Administration > Firmware Upgrade.

This is a beta release. Its filename carries _BETA and the router reports the same string on the dashboard and the About page, so you can always tell which channel a flashed image came from. Stable releases carry no marker.
