v2.8.3 — Warden lists survive the move to flash, and the LAN shield is whole again

The remainder of the same review that produced v2.7.9 — thirty-one smaller findings — plus two
faults that only appeared once the earlier fixes were exercised on real hardware. Both of those
are the reason this release exists, and both share a trait worth naming: nothing reported an
error. Every layer said it had succeeded.

  • Your Warden block and allow lists are no longer destroyed when they move to flash storage.
These lists moved out of nvram so they would stop being capped at about 63 entries. The one-time
copy read the old list through a path that silently returns nothing for values past roughly
250 characters, wrote an empty file, and then cleared the original — so a longer list was not
shortened, it was gone, and the page reported a successful migration. The copy now reads through
a path proven to return the list in full, and the nvram original is deliberately kept, so the
worst case is a list that did not move rather than one that no longer exists. Verified on
hardware with a 60-entry list: copied byte for byte, every entry active in the filter, and the
    original still in place afterwards.
  • The LAN shield is built correctly again. The rule that stops your own devices from being
caught by a threat or country feed was assembled from a text pattern that lost a character, so
it was written with no network to protect. It is rebuilt and checked against every common home
network size. This is the rule that makes a bad feed entry survivable, so it should never have
been able to go missing quietly.
  • A Warden list update is now all-or-nothing. Updates, folds and statistics are published
atomically, so an interrupted refresh can no longer leave a half-written list in force.
  • One slow feed can no longer eat the whole update window. A custom feed that stalls is given
a deadline instead of being allowed to consume the time budget the other feeds need.
  • Gatekeeper is steadier. It no longer grants a time-based allowance before the router knows
the correct time, it evicts its oldest tracked devices instead of growing without limit, and it
says so in the log when a device list is too long to load rather than truncating in silence.
  • The Warden log no longer cries wolf at every start. With a block list in use, the router
reported "protection deferred" on every start of the service while protection was in fact fully
active — because the last cleanup step in its own setup script reports "nothing to do" as a
failure. The message was harmless in itself, but it made the real version of that warning —
the one that means protection genuinely has not come up yet — impossible to pick out.
  • Also: the router watches for the condition behind the long-standing "stuck settings" fault
and reports it rather than acting on it; the rules engine loads its saved configuration as soon
as it is switched on; a firewall list that exists but cannot be read is no longer treated as an
empty one; and every generated maintenance script now reads settings through the guarded path,
so none of them can hang waiting on the router's settings store.
