SMTP Connector 1.4.0

This is the biggest update since SMTP Connector started. I went through the whole plugin, fixed every problem I could find, and gave the settings screen a proper redesign. Thank you to everyone who reported issues and kept using the plugin!

Install or update

Download smtp-connector.zip below and upload it in Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin. If an older version is installed, choose Replace current with uploaded. Your settings, password and email log are kept.

Please don't use GitHub's "Source code" downloads for this. They unpack to a folder with a different name, so WordPress would install a second copy instead of updating yours. The easiest way is still WordPress.org: https://wordpress.org/plugins/smtp-connector/

The important fixes

  • Every email was sent twice since 1.3.0. If your customers received double emails, this was the reason. Sorry about that, it's fixed now.
  • Saving the SMTP password is reliable. The first save (and the first save after "Reset Settings") stored it wrongly, so login failed until you saved again. Affected passwords are repaired automatically.
  • "Leave blank to keep the existing password" really works now.
  • Emails no longer stop while SMTP isn't set up yet. WordPress keeps sending normally until you finish the setup.
  • Sites on localhost or an intranet address can send email again, and sites without SECURE_AUTH_KEY no longer stop with "Encryption key is missing."
  • The email log shows the right recipients and statuses, and old logs are cleaned up again (also on multisite).

New

  • A redesigned, mobile-friendly settings screen with one-click setup for Gmail, Zoho, Amazon SES, Brevo, Mailgun and SendGrid.
  • A status card that shows how your emails travel and whether SMTP is active.
  • Failed emails show the exact SMTP error, in the email log and when you send a test email.
  • "None" encryption, a switch to turn SMTP login off, an on/off switch for the email log, and a setting for how long logs are kept.

Security

  • The SMTP password uses stronger, authenticated encryption based on your site's own security keys. If those keys change, the plugin pauses sending and asks for the password again, instead of failing silently.
  • Email previews open in a sandboxed frame that blocks scripts and tracking images.
  • On multisite, only network administrators can see the email log.

SMTP Connector now needs WordPress 5.9+ and PHP 7.2+. The full list of changes is in CHANGELOG.md.
