Overview
GammaOS Next v1.1.0 delivers the first official Android 14 / LineageOS 21 release for the Anbernic RG405M, RG405V, and RG505.
This update marks a significant generational leap from the original GammaOS Android 12 builds released more than two years ago, bringing modern OS capabilities, improved performance, and a refreshed user experience.
Both Full (Google Apps included) and Lite (no Google services, performance-focused) editions are available.
Installation is performed through fastboot, with full documentation here:
https://github.com/TheGammaSqueeze/GammaOSNext/wiki/GammaOS-Next-Installation#anbernic-rg405m--rg405v--rg505
Important: This update must be installed fresh from the original GammaOS v1.5.1 release.
Due to significant architectural and vendor-level changes between Android 12 and Android 14, in-place upgrades or dirty flashes are not supported and will result in instability or boot failures.
A clean installation is mandatory.
Key Features
Android 14 / LineageOS 21 Base
A fully modernized system stack offering improved security, performance, rendering stability, and scheduler responsiveness compared to earlier Android 12 GammaOS releases.
Global Shader Pipeline
GammaOS introduces unified system-wide shaders:
- Includes CRT-Simple and LCD3x, with more effects planned
- Integrated with rotation, scaling, and high-DPI displays
- Long-press the Shader Quick Settings tile to access configuration options
Immersive Mode (Enabled by Default)
A consistent console-style experience:
- Hides status and navigation bars
- Swipe from edges to reveal bars when needed
- Toggle via Quick Settings
GammaEQ (System-Level Audio EQ)
A new audio equalizer engine in AudioFlinger:
- Operates at the fast mixer level where supported
- Configurable via properties in this release
- Dedicated UI coming in a future update
- Designed for low latency and stable game audio output
Core System Improvements
- Improved task switcher responsiveness and touch handling
- Reduced rendering latency and animation jitter
- Lower background CPU usage and improved thermal behavior
- Faster system boot times
- More reliable D-pad and analog input handling
- Broad stability improvements across the frameworks and vendor stack
Device-Specific Enhancements for RG405M / RG405V / RG505
This release includes extensive improvements beyond stock firmware:
- Updated GPU and graphics libraries for increased stability and performance (no more Retroid drivers needed)
- Corrected display timings and improved refresh behavior
- Enhanced governor setup yielding smoother frame pacing
- Better battery life, especially on the Lite edition
- Lower input latency and reduced microstutter in demanding emulators
- Improved Wi-Fi reliability compared to earlier vendor builds
- Retuned thermal behavior for more consistent sustained performance
Recommendation: The Lite build provides the highest stability, lowest latency, and best endurance for gaming workloads.
Installation Instructions
This release must be flashed using fastboot.
Step-by-step installation guidance is provided here:
