Story Co-op Preview 1
First public preview of Online Story co-op for Time to Split, the first mission.
Important
This is an unfinished feature for testing; other missions are not supported by this preview.
What is included
- Online Story lobby for two to four players, using the existing Online directory service, with host-selected mission/difficulty, briefing and player progress.
- Independent full-screen player views, coordinated intro/loading and opening weapon handoffs.
- Host-owned NPC creation, movement, animation, firing and lifecycle replication; shared objectives and opening world effects.
- Host-only level/checkpoint restart, with coordinated reload and inventory restoration.
- Restored difficulty trophies and centered lobby details.
- The bundled portable launcher recovers from brief Windows file locks during metadata, settings and session writes, preserving atomic replacement and backups.
- Shared Online fixes for targetless bot gunfire and gameplay packets during frontend transitions, plus main-branch fixes through
23fe3b1.
Known issues and test scope
- Other players can still see Player 2's playermodel already spawned into the level during the hanging upside down scene.
- Guests can still sometimes shoot and bump into invisible NPCs. These particular NPCs seem to be placed throughout the level.
- NPC mouths do not animate for guests.
- Some NPC enemies remain standing in place. They can be shot at, but cannot die. They just stand there.
- Explosive barrels in the sniper bunker are still client side.
- Guests cannot always see blood on the ground.
- Splitter camouflage still not working for guests.
- Barricade after the first Splitter holdout section (after "Use the gun emplacement to defend against the TimeSplitter attack" objective) does not break for guests. They remain blocked by the barricade.
- Only the host sees the small top-right thumbnail video, of the rebel base door, after completing the last objective.
- After level completion, at the rewards screen, if a guest continues through the menu, they reach a blank menu screen and the host's game crashes.
- One time, when the host finished the mission and triggered the ending cutscene, the guest screen flashed and then appeared to crash.
- Guests on other networks do not hear NPC dialogue.
- Guests have a chance to randomly have negative ammo value. Seems to be when picking up ammo for that gun.
- If a guest dies, the host gets a game over message, but does not always get a menu prompt to restart from checkpoint or level.
- This release contains Windows x64 assets only. Native Mac Online support is not available.
Release validation passed: the Windows source build and native checks; 1,343 tests and 107 subtests (44 skipped); bundled launcher checks; fresh installation and upgrade/personal-file preservation; and packaged Online directory, invitation and three-peer UDP relay checks. These checks do not establish complete mission or WAN acceptance.
How to test
Use Launcher 1.3.1 or newer, select Update channel: Preview, then Testing track: Story Co-op Preview, and install v0.4.0-story-coop.1. All peers must use this exact preview; it is not network-compatible with other releases.
Choose Story > Online. The host creates a lobby, selects Time to Split, and starts after the other players join. Start with two players. Check the opening weapon handoff, guest gunfire/NPC behavior and host checkpoint restart; completion testing should cover outro, rewards and the host's Continue action. Subsequent mission support is out of scope.
Updates preserve existing game data, settings, textures and saves. This preview uses the existing save location: back up saves or use a separate portable installation for testing. Enhanced textures are an optional separate download and are omitted from this game package. Original supported US Xbox game files are required and are not distributed.
