As promised a few versions ago, the Advanced Custom Fields plugin has been removed. The theme is now completely independent from any plugins and about 5 MB lighter as well. When I originally decided to use the plugin, three years back, I did so because adding custom fields myself appeared to be a huge pain. And now that I did, I can confidently say: it really was! Worth it, though.
