Warning

This repo is Betterfox fork.

📣 Release Notes

  • Vote in our discussion poll: Should Betterfox continue to disable Firefox’s captive portal detection by default?
  • Betterfox now allows you to create a Copy Link to Highlight when you highlight and right-click text. The feature matches most Chromium browsers except Brave — though they plan to introduce it soon, too.
    • This example highlights the sentence "You can technically generate your own text fragment" on the navigation page.
  • Added a private alternative to Google's geolocation service, BeaconDB #378
  • I was a little too opinionated in disabling new tab shortcuts when I started this project years ago. I've decided to leave them enabled by default and remove the sponsored shortcuts. Also added instructions for how to hide shortcuts and weather in Optional Hardening.
  • Common Overrides now explains how to downgrade to Standard ETP. This will help users who find that stricter settings break websites.
  • When using Strict ETP, Mozilla's Smartblock feature handles social media embeds like Instagram and TikTok, but not Twitter (X) or Reddit. We removed the exception rules for Twitter and Reddit by default, but kept them in Common Overrides, if you prefer to allow social media embeds.
    • Get our click2load list in uBlock Origin to click-to-load more third-party content embeds.
  • Bug Report forms are now in YML format
  • Removed Mozilla's cookie banner handling feature because they deprecated the project, for which I made a few suggestions in the past (RIP).
    • Be sure to reset cookiebanners.service.mode and cookiebanners.service.mode.privateBrowsing.
  • Removed HTTPS First and related prefs because Firefox now enables them by default.

👾 BetterZen

  • Due to the browser's popularity, we're introducing a user.js specifically for the Zen Browser called BetterZen (ik, ik). It includes Betterfox tweaks that Zen doesn’t include by default, plus a temporary performance adjustment.
    • zen.view.experimental-rounded-view is disabled because it causes excessive CPU and GPU resources when scrolling. We will remove this override once developers fix the bug.
  • Added a Zen-specific Overrides section with useful prefs, with more planned in the future. You will need to enable most manually.
  • Smoothfox links to the scrolling prefs Zen uses, showing which ones you need to reset to use a different configuration.
