github SysAdminDoc/HushTelegram v0.0.23

HushTelegram v0.0.23 has 67 patches for the Google Play build of Telegram 13.1.1 (org.telegram.messenger, version code 72371) and telegram.org's Telegram 13.1.0 (org.telegram.messenger.web, version code 72299). It's on Morphe patcher 2.1.0 like 0.0.22, so Morphe Manager 2.3.0 or newer still loads it. Nearly all of it came from your reports again, and it changes something for #9, #29, #39, #41, #45, #48, #49 and #50. Calls can be recorded to a file on your phone, and a record button on the call screen does it for just the call you're on. View-once and timed photos and videos can stay in the chat after you open them, or get copied to Download/Telegram. Ghost mode can hide typing and your online status now. With UnifiedPush, reaction notifications can play a sound and name custom emoji, and turning UnifiedPush on also switches on Telegram's own background connection so messages arrive while the app is closed. New switches start off, except the Ways in ones, which keep every way into the HushTelegram settings open until you change them.

New in this release

  • Ghost mode has two more parts, Hide typing and Hide online status, both off by default. With Ghost mode and Hide typing on, people in a chat don't see that you're typing, recording a voice message or sending a file, in secret chats too. With Hide online status on, Telegram isn't told that you're online while you use it. Going offline still goes out, so your account shows as offline when you leave. The diagnostic report counts what each one kept back. (#45)

  • UnifiedPush notifications has a new switch, Sound for reaction notifications, off by default. Telegram keeps every reaction notification silent. Turn it on and they play the sound and vibration you picked in Telegram's Notifications and Sounds > Reactions. (#41)

  • Reaction notifications with UnifiedPush notifications now cover custom emoji reactions too. Once Telegram has loaded that emoji on your phone, the notification names the regular emoji it stands for. (#41)

  • Disable call debug upload has a new switch, Record calls, off by default. Turn it on and every call is saved on your phone as one .m4a file with both sides in it, named for when the call began, in Recordings/Telegram calls (Music/Telegram calls on Android 11 and older). Voice chats and live streams you're in get saved the same way. The other person isn't told. On Android 9 it needs Telegram's storage permission. (#39)

  • Record button on calls, off by default, puts a round record button on the call screen right under the minimize arrow. Tap it to record just the call you're on. With Record calls on, the button starts out red and a tap skips recording that one call, keeping what was already recorded. It hides along with the rest of the call screen's buttons, and the choice ends with the call. (#39)

  • A new Ways in section on the HushTelegram settings page has a switch for each way to open them, all on by default. They are the HushTelegram row on Telegram's Settings page, a long press on the Telegram title in the chat list, the row in the side menu, and the shortcut in the menu you get from holding Telegram's icon. A way you turn off acts like stock Telegram. The row, the long press and the side menu entry are gone, and the shortcut is taken off the launcher, pinned copies included. One way always stays on so you can get back in, and turning off the last one puts the switch back with a short message. No restart needed. Lock HushTelegram settings holds these switches like the rest. (#29)

  • Save downloaded files has a third switch, Also save view-once and timed media, off by default. With it on, view-once and self-destructing photos, videos, voice messages and video messages get copied to Download/Telegram once they download, readable like any other file. Secret chats stay in Telegram whatever the switches say. From a chat that doesn't allow saving, Also save from chats that don't allow saving has to be on as well. (#9)

  • Keep deleted messages has a new switch, Keep view-once and timed media, off by default. Turn it on and a view-once or self-destructing photo, video, voice message or video message someone sends you stays in the chat after you open it. There's no countdown, and you can open it again as often as you like. Secret chats work as usual. Timed media you send stays on your phone too. (#9)

Fixes

  • With Hide reactions under messages on, TalkBack no longer reads out reactions you can't see. A message reads the same as one nobody reacted to, and Saved Messages tags are still read since they still show. (#48)

  • Leaving Message times with seconds out in Morphe Manager now really leaves it out. Keep deleted messages used to pull the whole patch back in, so its switch still showed in the Hush settings. Now it takes along only the part it needs to mark a message deleted. (#49)

  • With UnifiedPush on, Hush now also turns on Telegram's own Keep-Alive Service and Background Connection once your push app hands over its address, so messages come in while Telegram is closed instead of when you next open it. It only does that if you never set either switch yourself, and the notification report says what turned them on. (#50)

Behind the scenes

  • The whole-app walk opens and closes the new Ways in section as well. Left off the walk's list, Ways in read as more rows of Updates, and the walk failed because Updates never looked closed. A contract test now holds the walk's sections to the ones the settings home draws, in the same order.

  • The whole-app walk gets past Android asking for contacts or photos over the screen it's opening. It says no (Don't allow, or Not now on Telegram's own contacts prompt, never Allow or Continue) and opens the screen again. If the ask keeps coming back, the walk's problem line names it instead of a bare "would not open".

  • The release build stage writes down how long the full gate took, the same way preflight already does, so a slow gate shows up next to the earlier timing.

  • Release preflight runs the pre-push hook's check for tracked files that name the maintainer's machine or a phone. Everyday pushes skip that hook, so one such name sat in a build script comment on main until the contract tests read it.

The changelog has every earlier release too.

How to update

  1. Install Morphe Manager 2.3.0 or newer. That's the same floor as 0.0.22, so if you patched that one you're set.
  2. Add HushTelegram as a patch source: https://morphe.software/add-source?github=SysAdminDoc%2FHushTelegram
  3. Get the right Telegram. From Google Play that's 13.1.1 (org.telegram.messenger, version code 72371), which APKMirror and Uptodown also carry. From telegram.org's Download button it's 13.1.0 (org.telegram.messenger.web, version code 72299). The patched app needs Android 9 or newer.
  4. Coming from 0.0.22? Patch the APK of the same build you're on and install it over your current HushTelegram with the same Morphe Manager signing key. Your settings and chats stay. New to HushTelegram? Uninstall the stock Telegram first, since Android won't put a patched app over one signed with a different key. Your chats come back when you sign in, but secret chats don't. Back up Morphe Manager's signing key after your first patch. You'll need it for every update.
  5. If Telegram turns down your login code with API_ID_PUBLISHED_FLOOD, that's Telegram refusing the public API ID that ships with any patched build, the Play one included. Register your own app at my.telegram.org/apps, using only letters and numbers in the short name. Then select Use registered Telegram API credentials, fill in apiId and apiHash, and patch again. The result installs over your current HushTelegram build. Keep both values private.
  6. Want HushTelegram's own icon, or Telegram's logo in white on the black launch screen? Turn on Expert mode in Morphe Manager and pick HushTelegram icon and name or Black and white launch logo before you patch.
  7. For notifications, open Telegram's Settings, tap Notifications, and turn on Keep-Alive Service and Background Connection under Other, near the bottom of the page. On phones where Firebase notifications don't come through, try the UnifiedPush notifications switch on HushTelegram's Notifications page with a UnifiedPush app like ntfy. It turns those two on for you unless you've set them yourself.
  8. To change HushTelegram's switches, open Telegram's Settings and tap HushTelegram settings, or press and hold the Telegram title at the top of your chat list. The new Ways in section on that page decides which of those (plus the side menu row and the icon shortcut) stay.

The .mpp download is a patch bundle, not a Telegram APK. Installation instructions.

What was checked

All 1728 runtime tests passed locally, and all 564 patch tests passed too (162 unit tests and 402 that patch the real Telegram APKs), along with both Android lints (the shared library and the Telegram extension). Every one of the 67 patches applied without forcing to telegram.org's Telegram 13.1.0 (version code 72299) and to the Google Play build of 13.1.1 (version code 72371). For each patched build the release receipt checked the package name, version, manifest, native libraries and zip alignment.

Both builds were patched from this exact bundle and installed over the HushTelegram already on a Galaxy S22, without clearing its data. Both were signed in to Telegram. On each one the walk opened Telegram's Settings, Privacy, Folders and Themes pages and a channel, then every section of the HushTelegram settings (the new Ways in section too) and the Changed switches page. That's 22 screens per build, with no crash and no problem found on either.
