github SysAdminDoc/HushFacebook v0.16.1

A quick fix for 0.16.0, which closed Facebook whenever comments opened on a lot of phones, posts opened from a notification included. Comments open normally again with Comment sheet options patched in, so there's no need to leave it out anymore. Instant games also download through Facebook itself now, since Google Play can't deliver them to a patched Facebook.

Fixes

  • Opening comments doesn't close Facebook any more. In 0.16.0, tapping a post's comment button, or the comments on a reel, crashed Facebook when Comment sheet options was patched in, even with every switch off or Hushfacebook paused. Phones and accounts that get Facebook's newer comment list hit it, opening a post from a notification included (issues #203, #204, #208, #209 and #210). Android's own check of the patched app passes on a phone now, where 0.16.0 failed it. The phone I check on gets Facebook's older comment list, so it never crashed either way.

  • Instant games download with Facebook's own downloader now. When Google Play had installed Facebook, Facebook could hand the game download to Play, which can't serve a patched build, so the game's loading screen closed right away. With Debug logging on, the report's module download line says when Play was skipped (issue #168). Checked in tests, not yet on a phone, since mine already had its games downloaded.

Reported issues

  • #203, #204, #208, #209 and #210 Facebook closing when comments open, a post from a notification included: fixed, with nothing to turn on or leave out.

  • #168 Instant games closing on their loading screen: games download through Facebook itself now. Please say on the issue whether yours opens.

Behind the scenes

  • The patch check that runs before a release now catches the mistake behind 0.16.0's comment crash without a phone. A hook that hands back the extension's answer without casting it to the type Facebook's method returns gets refused, naming the method. Run against the published 0.16.0 build, it flags exactly the comment method that crashed.

The changelog has every earlier release too.

How to update

  1. Update Morphe Manager to 1.34.0 or newer, then refresh the Hushfacebook source.
  2. Patch Facebook 583.0.0.39.55. On most phones that's build 475614366, the arm64-v8a one. Phones with a 32-bit processor take build 475614365, the armeabi-v7a one.
  3. Install over your current patched Facebook with the manager's existing signing key. Keep that key so updates keep working.

The .mpp download is a patch bundle, not a Facebook APK. Installation instructions.

Look over a diagnostic report before you share it. The filter can still miss private text it doesn't recognize.

What was checked

Local checks passed: 3430 runtime tests and 1095 patch tests with no failures, plus both Android lints and the release-script checks. All 94 patches applied without forcing to Facebook 583.0.0.39.55, both the arm64-v8a and the 32-bit build, and a second build of the same commit matched this bundle entry for entry. I put 0.16.0 and then this bundle on a phone signed in to a full account. When 0.16.0 installed, Android's own check of the app logged the same error the crash reports showed. With 0.16.1 that check logged nothing, and Android's verifier raised exactly what it raises for Meta's unpatched build, which is nothing. Comments then opened with no crash on a page post with over a thousand comments and on a day old post with 62. That account never got the comment list that crashed, so it didn't crash on 0.16.0 either, and the install check is what shows the fix. The whole-app walk from 0.16.0 wasn't repeated, since only the comment patch and the game download patch changed. Instant game downloads are checked in tests only, and the 32-bit build by the patch tests alone.
