VibeServer for macOS — v0.2.0 Alpha (Opus audio)

pre-release6 hours ago

VibeServer for macOS — v0.2.0 Alpha. Notarised (Developer ID); downloads and opens without a Gatekeeper warning. Still an alpha: one SDR at a time, more admin controls to come. Best on your local network; if you expose it online, set a PIN.

Headline: Opus audio

Audio now streams as Opus instead of ADPCM. It's roughly 4× lighter on bandwidth at the same quality — the main reason is VibeSDR Jr, the standalone Apple Watch receiver, which reaches VibeServer over the watch's Bluetooth link where bandwidth is tight. Opus (plus a smaller spectrum) is what makes decent stereo audio and a live waterfall fit down that pipe (~10 KB/s total on the wrist). The codec is negotiated automatically, with a raw-PCM fallback for anything that can't decode Opus.

Also in this build

  • Fullband mono on request — a client on a mono output (the watch speaker) can ask for a mono stream, so the whole bitrate goes into one fullband channel: noticeably clearer, at the same bandwidth. Stereo clients (AirPods, browsers) keep the stereo image.
  • Spectrum bin lever — clients can request fewer spectrum bins to shrink each frame (the watch needs far fewer than a desktop), cutting waterfall bandwidth dramatically.
  • Rock-solid single-listener handling — same-session takeover, an application-level liveness ping, and aggressive TCP keepalive mean a client that vanishes (a watch going to sleep, a dropped link) frees the radio within seconds instead of leaving a phantom "connected" session.
  • Mac app niceties — the window now shows every way to connect (addresses + copy buttons) with live audio/spectrum/fps counters, a Bonjour advertise toggle (privacy), and an "up to" capture-rate cap. Plus fixes for a menu-bar flicker and a rare hang.

The built-in web client and the VibeSDR apps (iPhone + Apple Watch) all speak Opus now.
