⚡ Claude Terminal v1.3.9

Tabs side by side, sessions that tell you when they need you, a side column that sums up each conversation, and Windows hooks that work without Git.

The headline

🪟  Split view

Put up to four tabs of one project side by side: split right or down from a tab's menu, by dropping a tab on the edge of another, or with Ctrl+Shift+D / Ctrl+Shift+S (rebindable). Panes resize from their handles, the focused pane is where you type, and the layout comes back with the session. Terminals and chats mix freely.

🔔  Sessions that need you say so

A session waiting on a permission, a question or a plan used to look almost like one still working, and a turn that failed ended exactly like one that succeeded. Now the tab gets a blue ring when it waits on you and a red dot when its last turn ended on an error, and the project bar and the project list count them, so you see it from anywhere (#247).

🧭  A side column for each conversation

Beside the transcript, collapsed until you open it: a brief of the session written on demand (what it is for, where it stands, what was decided, what to know before carrying on), the branches it worked on with their pull requests, and its linked tickets. Reopening a brief costs nothing, and it tells you how many messages came since (#246, #248).

🪛  Windows without Git works again

On a Windows machine without Git for Windows, Claude Code runs hooks through PowerShell, where Claude Terminal's hooks did not parse, and since Claude Code 2.1.298 a failing hook blocks the tool call. Every tool was refused, in terminals and in chat. Hooks are now run without a shell, and the ones already installed are repaired at startup. Machines with Git keep working as before.

Everything else

New

  • Choose the effort subagents run at, in Settings > Chat, and per Claude step of an automation ("Inherit" by default). It applies when neither the agent nor the call sets one, SSH chats included (Claude Code 2.1.316+ on the host)
  • Refuse file writes outside the project, an opt-in switch in Settings > Chat. Write, Edit and NotebookEdit refuse any path outside the conversation's folder, in every permission mode, bypass included. A session with it on loses EnterWorktree / ExitWorktree, shell commands and MCP tools are not covered, and an agent cannot turn it off over MCP (Claude Code 2.1.314+)
  • On macOS and Linux, terminal tabs read Claude Code's own status (OSC 7501) to know when a session waits on you, SSH tabs included. The hooks stay the source on a local tab when they are on. Nothing changes on Windows, where ConPTY does not pass the terminal's answer on

Fixed

  • Terminal tabs showed "ready" while Claude was working, with hooks off and in SSH tabs. Claude Code now animates its title with half circles instead of braille, and only braille was recognised
  • The Cost tab priced Haiku 5.5 at ten times its price, at Haiku 4.5's rates, and Sonnet 5.5's cache reads at double. Both now use their published rates, Haiku 5.5's long-prompt tier included, automations too. The offline model picker offers Haiku 5.5
  • /mcp reconnects the MCP servers a live chat session lost, for instance after re-authorizing one mid-conversation (#244, #245)
  • A tab woken from idle sleep reopened on an empty "Conversation resumed" after a restart. It keeps the conversation it was on
  • Tabs an agent drives over MCP stay in the background. Opening, typing into or closing a tab no longer takes you out of yours: your active tab, the project shown, the focus and the caret are left alone
  • Remote Control tells claude.ai the session's Claude Code version as soon as it connects, instead of after the first turn. For an SSH chat, it is the host's
  • Fork subagents (copies of the conversation, on by default since Claude Code 2.1.302) are labelled "Fork of this conversation" instead of the bare word "fork"
  • A new chat tab lost its name in the sessions list, which showed its first prompt instead. And a tab saved before it learned its conversation's id failed to resume on every restart, opening empty: it now reopens as a new conversation under its name (#249, #250)
  • A Linear ticket Claude created in a session was never suggested for it: it was keyed to the first ticket its description linked to, which the session already knew (#251, #252)
  • On Windows, a session created right after the sessions list was read stayed hidden from it until the cache expired (#253, #254)

Under the hood

  • Bundled Claude Code updated to 2.1.316 (Agent SDK 0.3.316). The haiku alias now points at Haiku 5.5
  • The remote terminal test suite runs under an invented environment, so it no longer depends on the variables of the machine running it

🙏 Thanks

@bleleve The session side column with its brief, branches and tickets (#246, #248), the attention flags on tabs (#247), /mcp reconnecting a live session (#244, #245), and the fixes for chat tab names, created Linear tickets and the sessions list on Windows (#250, #252, #254)
