BetterCast v20 — your phone on your Mac, and updates that actually update

latest releases: receiver-1.1.1, android-1.4, backup/pre-windows-merge...
one month ago

See your iPhone or iPad on this Mac

Plug it in, unlock it, and pick it under Receive. The phone's screen opens in a window, with sound, and the window takes the phone's shape including when you rotate it.

Nothing is installed on the phone and nothing runs there. macOS publishes a connected device's screen as a capture source, which is how QuickTime records a phone, so this works with any iPhone or iPad that has a Lightning or USB-C port.

You will be asked for camera and microphone access. That reads oddly for showing a screen, but macOS classifies a connected phone's screen as a camera and its sound as a microphone. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

This is mirroring, not control. iOS gives no third-party app a way to send taps back to the phone, which is why the paid apps in this space are mirror-only too. Note that the other direction, Mac to phone, has full touch and keyboard control and always has.

Update Now actually updates

The update button used to open the releases web page and leave you to find the file, download it, and install it. Four steps to accept a fix you had already agreed to. It now downloads the new version with a progress bar and opens it, so it is one click and a drag.

Being honest about one thing: this only helps from v20 onwards. Getting to v20 is still a manual download, because the old button is what you have today.

Fixed

  • Info buttons opened a container far taller than the sentence inside it, with the text stranded at the bottom
  • Clicking the app icon after closing the window did nothing, and File > New Window was the only way back
  • Streams flooded the network on Wi-Fi. A 20 Mbps setting was measured sending 54, which saturated the link and queued frames, felt as seconds of lag on Windows receivers
  • Quality kept overshooting and crashing back rather than settling. It now remembers the level that failed and stops short of it

Known

Phone mirroring has been tested on an iPhone 13 Pro over Lightning. It should work on any iOS device with a cable, and on iPads, but that is the one it has actually run on. Reports welcome.
