Vulkan is now playable in all four games
Gears of War 1 and 2 already ran well on Vulkan; with this release Gears 3 and Judgment do too, so all four games are now playable on Vulkan - great news for Steam Deck, SteamOS and Linux players. The black or wrong textures in Gears 3 and Judgment (black props, a neon-blue Cole, garbled text) are fixed, and Vulkan is no longer marked experimental anywhere.
Also in this release
- Gears 2: no more crash at start-up when the voice language and the game language are the same (e.g. French voices with French text) (#216, #217).
- Gears 3 ultrawide: no more off-centre camera (#220).
- Launcher: Mouse turn when aiming, Hide on-screen notes, Unlock Insane and Horde bots are now remembered between launches (#222).
- Gears 3: the 60 fps limit is now exactly 60 (it ran at 62, with uneven frame pacing) (#225).
- Gears 3: Exit Game on the main menu works after you have played and gone back to the menu (#215).
- DLSS / FSR / XeSS in Gears 3 and Judgment: characters and other moving objects get their own motion vectors, so they no longer smear or flicker (#150, #147). Gears 1 keeps DLSS experimental (its characters still flicker with DLSS; SMAA is clean).
- DLSS is no longer marked highly experimental in Gears 2, Gears 3 and Judgment (still is in Gears 1).
- Gears 3: "Horde bots" (Gameplay tab, off by default): in local Horde, press Back / View on the first Horde scoreboard to add two bots (thanks to francoissubke-blip for the tip, #89). New - not tested in a full Horde game yet.
Thanks
- francoissubke-blip for the Horde bots tip (#89).
- Everyone who sent reports and screenshots for the Vulkan textures (#202, #213, #131) and Exit Game (#215).
