COGBox 0.4.0
Upgrading to 0.4.0 - what you need to do
1. Add each game's title update (now required)
Title updates are now required to play. Disc-only versions are no longer supported.
| Game | Title update needed | Title ID folder on the console |
|---|---|---|
| Gears of War | Title Update 5 | 4D5307D5
|
| Gears of War 2 | Title Update 6 | 4D53082D
|
| Gears of War 3 | Title Update 6 | 4D5308AB
|
| Gears of War: Judgment | Title Update 4 | 4D530A26
|
- Copy the update package from your own console: it's in
Content\0000000000000000\<title ID>\000B0000\. - In COGBox, turn to the game and press ADD UPDATE (or drop the package file onto the COGBox window, or use the
game's About tab). - COGBox checks it and unpacks it into
<COGBox>\<game>\game\update. Nothing else to set: Play always uses it.
If the update is missing, the game's box shows Needs Title Update ... and ADD UPDATE instead of Play. Your
copy and saves stay where they are; add the update and the game is ready again.
The Gears 2 and Gears 3 disc builds are no longer in the download, and the "Game version" option is gone (greyed out).
2. Gears 3 saves are converted automatically
The first time you start Gears 3 on 0.4.0, your existing saves are converted for the friendly-fire fix (#68). You
don't need to do anything.
Only Gears 3 saves are converted - Gears of War, Gears 2 and Judgment saves are not touched.
- A backup of each changed file is kept next to it, named
<file>.pre-xuid0:PlayerStorage.dat(your campaign
progress) andprofile\User\63E83FFF(your profile), both under<COGBox>\Gears3\user\. - To roll back: close Gears 3, rename the converted file (e.g. add
.new), then rename the.pre-xuid0copy
back to the original name (remove.pre-xuid0). - Going back to 0.3.x? Restore the
.pre-xuid0files first (steps above). A converted save started on 0.3.x
makes Gears 3 reset it. Restored saves are converted again the next time you start 0.4.0.
3. Removed in this release
- Gears 3 Cheats and "Unlock all mutators" are gone for now. They only worked with the disc version (Title Update 6
shows a dirty-disc error with them). - The Gears 2 / Gears 3 disc builds are no longer included (see 1).
4. Your name in the games (Player name, #119)
- In COGBox, open any game's Settings, then the About tab.
- Type your name in Player name (up to 15 letters, digits or spaces; extra spaces are trimmed). It's saved straight away.
- Start (or restart) any game: player 1 shows that name in all four games. Leave it empty for "User".
It only changes the name shown: your profile folder and saves stay exactly where they are.
Fixes and new options
Gears 3
- #68 Gears 3 killed out of nowhere / squad friendly fire: fixed (thanks to Xenia Canary's XNetRandom and sign-in
info fixes). Existing Gears 3 saves are converted automatically on first start (a backup is kept).
Controls and mouse
- Mouse turn speed no longer changes with the frame rate: native mouse look turns the engine's mouse smoothing off (#118).
- Small mouse movements aren't lost when zoomed in, e.g. with the Longshot (#115).
- Gears 3: the mouse turns the same amount in every camera mode: down but not out, roadie run, cover, aiming and zoom
(#114, #52). New Controls option Mouse turn when aiming: choose "Game's (slower)" to keep the console's slower aim. - Controller: a radial (round) stick dead zone option and controller layouts (Southpaw, A/B swap, bumpers /
triggers swap or a custom mapping) (#95, #97).
Display and performance
- Gears 2 32:9 ultrawide works: big render targets get memory of their own instead of crashing (#94).
- Gears 2 ultrawide: exact Hor+ field of view for every camera, so the view is no longer cut at the top and bottom (#74).
- Vsync: a frame cap equal to the refresh rate stays there (60 on a 60 Hz TV, not 57) (#106).
- Gears 3: the front-end menus are capped at 60 fps, so the GPU no longer runs flat out there (#101).
- The shader note and achievement pop-ups no longer upset the frame-rate target. New Hide on-screen notes option (#121).
- Lens flares are turned off automatically wherever Real occlusion can't hide them behind walls: Vulkan, Wine / Proton,
and DirectX 12 with Real occlusion off (#102). - New Character detail (LOD) option (#113).
- Gears 3: fixed a start-up crash (0xC0000005) in the start-up memory scan (#116).
Launcher
- Player name box on the About tab: every game shows that name (your gamertag) for player 1. Display only, so saves are untouched (#119).
- Voice language separate from the text language (#87).
- Back up saves no longer freezes: saves and profiles only, written on a separate thread (#120 report).
- Faster carousel / settings cross-fade.
- More versions recognised as working: Gears of War default.xex
c25a48e7(#127) and5ed6f2a3(#88), Gears 3
Title Update 667b0c9c5(#109).
Mods
- Gears of War, Gears 3 and Judgment: mods that add new files now load. Table-of-contents lines keep their own layout,
and added files go first and only into the main table (#122, thanks KiltedKernel).
Docs
- README: adding DLC by hand (folder layout) and the Gears 3 cheat keys (#110).
Known issues
- Other Gears 3 sudden deaths (#55, #79, #120) may share #68's cause - please retest on 0.4.0 and tell us.
- Gears 2 mouse turn speed still changes with the camera (#52 follow-up). Gears 3 is fixed.
- Online / System Link co-op on 0.4.0 needs a two-PC test for Gears 3. The #68 fix changes the random numbers
(before, every PC made the same "random" values) and the "online ID" Gears 3 sees (now none, on every PC). COGBox's
System Link finds and connects PCs by IP address and doesn't use those IDs, but Gears 3 co-op on 0.4.0 hasn't been
tried on two PCs yet. Every PC must run the same COGBox version. Gears of War, Gears 2 and Judgment are unchanged.
