Sill 0.6.0 brings the clipboard both ways between your Mac and your iPhone or iPad, sound from your Mac as a beta, and a locked Mac that shows only its lock screen. On the device there's more: a hardware keyboard and trackpad that work as soon as the picture shows, pinch to zoom, Larger Picture on iPhone, typing in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, your Mac computers as tiles, and the tour once more with what's new marked. On the Mac, Virtual Display and Send Audio are on by default, a window Sill resized goes back to its own frame, and security fixes from a scan of the code.
One version for both apps. This is Sill for Mac 0.6.0 (1276), and it goes with Sill for iPhone and iPad 0.6.0 (1276), built from the same commit. Each half still works with the other's 0.5.1, without the clipboard, the sound and the locked Mac's cover: those need both apps at 0.6.0. Sill for iPhone and iPad 0.6.0 is on its way to the App Store (https://apps.apple.com/app/id6816359860), which has 0.5.1 until then. If you build it from source, build it from this release's tag.
New for the iPhone and iPad
- Larger Picture, in Settings on iPhone: held upright, a window's picture takes the place of the window thumbnails and reaches down to where the keyboard comes up. Set a window's text size with Aa and your Mac makes it as tall as the picture. The Desktop keeps the usual layout.
- A hardware keyboard and trackpad: with a keyboard attached, what you type goes to your Mac as soon as its picture shows, Esc included, without the Keyboard button. Two fingers on a trackpad, or a mouse's scroll wheel, now scroll the window under the pointer.
- Reverse Scrolling, in Settings: a finger dragged over the picture, or two fingers on the trackpad below it, scroll the other way. A trackpad or mouse connected to your iPad keeps following its Natural Scrolling setting.
- Pinch to zoom: two fingers zoom the picture up to 5× around the point between them, and move it while it's zoomed. Taps, clicks and scrolls land on what you see under your finger. Pinch all the way out to see everything again.
- Window controls sooner: hold a window's thumbnail and its close, minimize and full-screen controls show after half a second, not a second and a half. Hold to Show Window Controls, in Settings, sets it from 0.2 to 2 seconds.
- Type in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other languages that compose their text, and dictate: you compose and choose on your iPhone or iPad, with the keyboards and dictation languages you set up in Settings, and what you choose is typed on your Mac.
- Your Mac computers as tiles, each with its screen as you last left it. Touch and hold one to put it in a group, such as Home or Work. To list them instead, tap the button beside Connect to a Mac; Sill remembers your choice.
- Copy and paste between your Mac and your iPhone or iPad: text you copy on your Mac is ready to paste here, and Paste in Sill pastes what you copied here where your Mac's cursor is. Share Clipboard, in Sill's settings on either, turns it off and on. It needs Sill for Mac 0.6.0.
- Sound from your Mac, a beta feature: your iPhone or iPad plays the sound of the window you're using, or of every app for the Desktop, a moment behind the picture. Send Audio, in Sill's settings on your iPhone or iPad or in the Sill menu on your Mac, turns it off and on for every device, and Mute in Sill's settings silences it on one device. It needs Sill for Mac 0.6.0.
- Aa starts at Off, which leaves your Mac's window as it is, and sliding it back to Off puts a window Sill resized back to its own size right away (with Sill for Mac 0.6.0; with an earlier one, Off only stops the resizing). On Sill's virtual display a window always fits, so Aa has no Off there. Aa is dimmed while the Desktop shows: it sizes a window.
- A locked Mac: while your Mac is locked, Sill shows its lock screen and nothing else, and while it is switched to another user, your iPhone or iPad says so. The Apps list, your Mac's menus, its sound and the clipboard wait until it is unlocked.
- The tour once more: after this update, the tour of Sill's controls shows once more, with what's new marked New. Take the Tour, at the bottom of Settings, shows it again any time.
- Fixed: after Sill sat in the background for hours, it could stop finding your Mac until you closed and reopened it. Sill now looks again when you come back, keeps trying for a few minutes while your Mac doesn't answer (when it's asleep, say), and connects when it does.
New for the Mac
- Virtual Display and Send Audio are on by default. A window you pick streams from Sill's own display, at your device's shape, and the sound of what streams goes to your devices. A Mac where you turned Virtual Display off keeps it off; either turns off in the Sill menu or in Settings. A virtual display is now at least 800 points on each side, so it always comes up at Retina scale (an iPhone held upright asked for a smaller one, which came up at 1x).
- The clipboard both ways. While Share clipboard with devices is on (Settings › General), text you copy on your Mac while a device is connected is ready to paste on it, and a device's Paste puts its text on your Mac's clipboard and presses ⌘V where your cursor is. Only text, up to 256 KB at a time. Text that came to your Mac from another of your devices through Universal Clipboard stays on your Mac. When macOS asks before apps read the clipboard, Sill says so in Settings › General and takes you to where you allow it.
- Sound from your Mac, a beta: Send Audio (Beta), in the Sill menu and in Settings, sends the sound of the streamed window's app, or of every app for the Desktop.
- A locked Mac streams only its lock screen, and nothing else leaves it. While your Mac is locked, a device gets its lock screen and no windows, thumbnails, Desktop, app list, menus, sound or clipboard, and nothing a device sends acts on your Mac but a paired device typing at the lock screen. While your Mac is at its login window or switched to another user, the device says so and shows nothing of it.
- A window Sill resized goes back to its own frame when it stops streaming: when you pick another window, disconnect or quit Sill. One you moved on your Mac keeps its place at its own size, and one you resized there, or that is in full screen, stays as you left it.
- The Settings window fits a small screen: it is never taller than the screen it's on, and the tab scrolls.
- Your Mac's display wakes when a device connects and stays on while you use your Mac from it, so a sleeping display no longer streams black. Left alone, it turns off by your Mac's own setting.
- The firewall, named: when the macOS firewall blocks Sill's executable while System Settings shows Sill allowed, the Sill menu says Devices Can't Connect and Settings › General gives the command that unblocks it, to copy.
- The pairing window over screen sharing, as an option: Show the pairing window to screen sharing, in Settings › Devices (off by default), lets you pair while you use your Mac through Screen Sharing or another remote desktop app. While it's on, anyone who can see your Mac's screen remotely can read the code.
- Tailscale from the Mac App Store is listed in Remote Access: its address was missing, so a Mac reached only through it listed nothing a device away from home could use.
- Fixed: on a display at 1x (not Retina), a window filled only a quarter of the picture and Aa changed nothing you could see. And after a long spell with no device, while your displays changed, the Desktop could stay black until you picked again.
- Security fixes, from a scan of the code:
- A renamed copy of Sill.app takes no test hook: Sill knows itself by its code signature, not its folder's name.
- A device's viewport can no longer crash Sill for Mac.
- A connection waiting for admission now costs its source, so a few addresses can no longer hold every waiting place.
- Direct Wireless Connection can be turned on or off from a device only if you paired it, and only at home.
- A device you remove, or that Require pairing or Remote Access stops serving, lands no more input on your Mac.
- In Sill for iPhone and iPad, the automatic reconnect to a Mac that lets any device in, and that you never paired, accepts only the key its session saw.
Requirements. A Mac with Apple silicon or an Intel processor, on macOS 14 or later, and an iPhone or iPad with iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later.
Good to know. Remote Access, over Tailscale or another VPN you run, is still off by default. Once a day Sill asks GitHub whether a newer version exists and never downloads anything by itself.
