ONLINE CTR v0.7 - Native Vulkan (experimental), Speed Mode, faster loading & in-game Graphics menu

latest release: v0.7.1
4 hours ago

v0.7 is a big update: it includes everything from v0.6.5 and is the recommended version.

Faster loading screens

Loading screens take about half the time. The game's archives are now decoded by liblzma on several threads, and the parts already decoded stay in memory for the next load. On a test PC, Crash Cove went from 10.8 s to about 5 s, and the title screen from 6.3 s to about 3 s. PCs with fewer cores gain less. Thanks to n0buholic for the liblzma decoding (Linux), now on Windows too. For now it applies to the USA edition (CUSA13795 1.21); the European edition keeps the game's own decoder.

Speed Mode (private rooms)

A new game mode for private rooms: races without item boxes or Wumpa crates, pure driving. The host chooses Normal, Speed or Battle in the Game Mode selector, and the players who join get the host's mode automatically, also when they join by invitation or from the Friends tab. Everyone in the room needs v0.7. Public matchmaking stays Normal for now. Thanks to n0buholic.

Native Vulkan engine (experimental)

The launcher has a new Graphics engine option: Vulkan (shadPS4), as before, or Native Vulkan (experimental), a renderer that draws the game without shadPS4's GPU emulation. It is a test: if something goes wrong, go back to Vulkan (shadPS4).

  • The first start with it builds its shaders from your copy of the game (about 4 to 5 minutes, once). A window shows the progress.
  • It has no DLSS, FSR 3, FSR 4 or TAA; FSR 1 works. The launcher greys out what it does not support.
  • USA edition (CUSA13795 1.21) only. On Linux it is included but has not been tested yet: please tell us how it goes.

Thanks to straightarrows for the native renderer.

In-game Graphics menu, Quit Game and Skip intro

  • The game's Options menu has a new Graphics tab: resolution, ultrawide, upscaling and its quality, FPS unlock, motion blur and FPS limit, with Restart to apply. USA edition (CUSA13795 1.21).
  • The main menu has a Quit button that closes the game.
  • New launcher option Skip intro videos (the Activision and Beenox logos).
  • Game MSAA (2x): the dotted lines it drew in the sky and in light shafts are fixed on NVIDIA. It stays off by default: it costs some performance, and on other GPUs the lines may still show.

Thanks to immaculatevibes2025.

Motion blur off by default

Motion blur is now off by default in both engines, and "Disable motion blur" now also removes the blur on moving objects (crowd, plants), not only the camera blur. You can turn it back on in the launcher or in the in-game Graphics menu.

Anonymous performance reports (optional)

The launcher asks you once whether to send an anonymous summary of how the game ran on your PC when it closes: graphics card, processor and memory, the graphics settings, the engine you used, FPS and loading times per track. Nothing personal: not your nickname, races or friends, and your IP is not stored. It helps us see which PCs need work. A copy always stays in the perf folder, and you can change your answer in the launcher's settings.

Friends list

The Friends tab is easier to use with many friends: the search box is at the top, and Online and Offline are sections you can fold.

Fixes

  • GPUs that worked in v0.6.4 start again (for example Maxwell GPUs such as the GTX 900 series and 940MX), #108. Only GPUs without Vulkan sparse buffers get the "not supported" message.
  • A black window at start that never went further: if Vulkan has not started 20 seconds after the window opens, the game is closed and started again without the Vulkan overlay layers that other programs add (recording, overlays).
  • Linux: the game language chosen in the launcher was not saved for the European edition, #111.

Error code 23: not fixed

Code 23 is not fixed, and it can still happen on any PC. It is a GPU hang with several different causes. If you get it, send us the log of that session (last_run_<your nickname>.log in the game folder). Copy it right after the crash, because the next start overwrites it.

Downloads

  • Windows: CTR-NitroFueled-PC-portable-v0.7-windows.zip. Python is included, so you don't need to install anything. Unzip it over your current folder, or into a new one and let the launcher bring your settings. Then open Crash™ Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.exe. Download the zip from this page, not "Source code".
  • Linux / Steam Deck: SacredFire-v0.7-x86_64.AppImage. Data, saves and the nickname key stay in ~/.local/share/sacredfire.

You need your own copy of the game: CUSA13795 or CUSA14876, base game and 1.21 update.

Thanks to n0buholic, straightarrows and immaculatevibes2025 for their pull requests, to Fearlus0 and Emanu1995 for their reports, and to everyone who sent logs.

Gracias a n0buholic.
Gracias a n0buholic.
    • Gracias a straightarrows.
  • Menú Gráficos en el juego, Salir y Saltar intro (de immaculatevibes2025):
    • nueva pestaña Gráficos en Opciones, con Reiniciar para aplicar (edición USA);
    • botón Salir en el menú principal;
    • opción Saltar los vídeos de inicio en el launcher;
    • el MSAA ya no dibuja líneas punteadas en el cielo en NVIDIA. Sigue apagado por defecto.
  • Arreglos:
    • vuelven a arrancar las GPUs que funcionaban en la v0.6.4 (por ejemplo Maxwell: GTX 900, 940MX), #108;
    • ventana negra al iniciar: si Vulkan no arranca en 20 segundos, el juego se reinicia sin las capas de overlay de otros programas;
    • Linux: el idioma elegido no se guardaba en la edición europea, #111.
