The auto-update counter was only counting upgrades via the Python auto-updater. Two other upgrade paths were uncounted:

ping_install_if_new() now detects version changes in the sentinel file and pings the auto-update counter when an upgrade occurred (sentinel exists with different version = not first install).
The auto-update number should jump significantly once 1.6.15 propagates.
