What's new
Nightjar 4.6.0 can restart, shut down or update your PC from its menu, gives Android and desktop one set of stream hotkeys you can change, adds a WASD stick to the modern on-screen controller, and brings Steam Deck and Linux handhelds a Flatpak in every release.
Your PC
- Restart PC and Shut down PC in a PC's menu on Android and desktop, on hosts that allow it for this device, with a warning before a shutdown when the PC may not wake from off, and the reason when Windows refuses.
- Update the PC's host from the PC's menu; Nightjar waits until the PC is back on the new version, says when the update waits for another device's stream, and shows the PC's reason when it fails. It stays in the menu while an automatic update waits for the PC to be idle.
Stream hotkeys
- Android and desktop share one set of stream hotkeys, the ones Moonlight uses (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Tab opens the stream menu, Q disconnects, Z releases input, S shows the overlay), and each can be changed or turned off in Settings → Controls → Stream hotkeys.
- On Android the stream menu moved from Ctrl+Alt+Shift+M to Tab and the local cursor from C to P; the old keys still work in this release and say once where they moved.
- To change one, press the new keys; a key pressed alone gets Ctrl+Alt+Shift. Combinations used for typing (Shift+A, AltGr letters, Ctrl+C) and the ones Windows keeps (Alt+Tab) are refused, and desktop always keeps a hotkey for Stream controls or Disconnect.
- Windows desktop: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Tab now closes the stream controls as it opens them, and works with input released or Send system keys off. It used to open Windows' task switcher over the stream instead. (#71)
- Windows and Linux desktop: Help, the stream controls, the start message and the hotkey settings now name the key your keyboard layout has at each stream hotkey's position. On a German keyboard, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Y releases input, as it always did, and the text now says so instead of Z.
On-screen controls
- The modern on-screen controller can add a WASD stick in Edit controller layout: it looks and moves like the other sticks but holds W, A, S and D, both keys on a diagonal, and lets every key go when you lift. (#61)
- The WASD stick vibrates once when it enters W, A, S or D and with a firmer click when it enters a diagonal, only on a change.
- Taps on the trackpads and their mouse buttons now vibrate too. Vibrate on press in Settings → Controls covers the modern controller, the WASD stick, the PC keyboard and the trackpads. (#61)
Steam Deck and Linux handhelds
- Steam Deck and Linux handhelds: every release now has a Flatpak. Under gamescope, Nightjar opens fullscreen without a border, works with a controller alone (Start+Back opens the stream menu) and presents HDR streams in HDR where gamescope offers scRGB. See Steam Deck.
Streaming
- On desktop, a resumed stream on a VRR monitor stays on VRR at the stream's own frame rate. The display check judged it by the rate of the stream's first second, called the monitor fixed-refresh half a second in, and the stream stayed on V-Sync with higher display times. A fixed-refresh monitor under a slower stream still turns to V-Sync. (#72, #75)
- On Android, sharpening and upscaling stay on for AV1 streams from AMD graphics at sizes like 1920x1080 or 1872 wide, which the PC sends with a few extra rows or columns; only the stream's own picture is shown.
Fixes
- Windows and Linux desktop: the Help page now uses the whole content area on large windows, like the other pages.
- Windows and Linux desktop: the German settings search hint fits its field.
- The "Audio arrival" log line no longer reads almost every packet as 8 to 15 ms late when a few come early, as they do about twice a second from Windows' audio engine on the PC. Real stalls still show. (#74)
Tested. On a Retroid Pocket 6 streaming from an RX 7900 XT PC, a 60 fps stream held 59.6 fps with no hang. Each of the WASD stick's 8 directions held exactly its keys on the PC and let them all go at the end, and a W held by the stick and a keyboard together went up once, when the last of them let go. The stream hotkeys, default and changed, acted without their keys reaching the PC, on Android and on Windows. A 1872x1052 AV1 stream from the AMD encoder kept the upscaler on, and an A/B at 720p showed no added delay. On Windows with an Odyssey G93SC, 4.5.0 fell to V-Sync when a 120 fps stream resumed in 2 of 2 runs, and this build in 0 of 2. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Tab stayed in the window with input released and with Send system keys off, and Windows' task switcher stayed shut with the hotkey held and Tab repeating. In that state, with the window in front and no keyboard grab, any other key takes about 14 µs longer to reach the stream (median of 4,000 keys); with the grab, or in other apps, nothing changes. The Flatpak ran under gamescope on a Linux NUC: 20 of 20 checks. Not tested on hardware yet: a working VRR panel, Restart PC, Shut down PC and a real host update, and a real Steam Deck.
The Flatpak is not signed. Check it against SHA256SUMS-4.6.0.txt on this page before you install it.
