What's new
Nightjar 4.5.0 gives every slider the thick look of the on-screen controls, shows a title for games without a cover, and adds Mute audio and two shortcut tiles: Game Bar and Record that. Balanced no longer drops frames when the stream is as fast as the display, and on Windows, system keys and Alt+F4 go to the PC.
Streaming
- Balanced no longer drops frames when the stream is as fast as the display and the PC takes phase-lock reports (about 6% at 120 fps on 120 Hz before) (#7).
- Smoothest video and the FPS limit recover sooner when the display's queue fills up and latency creeps up.
- Windows and Linux: odd stream sizes such as 2184x1968 no longer show a strip at the edge with AV1, and the picture keeps its exact shape.
- Mute audio, under Settings > Audio on Android, Windows and Linux, streams without sound on this device. The microphone and Play audio on the PC keep working (#62).
Controls
- The stream menu's Shortcuts have two more built-in tiles: Game Bar (Win+G) opens the Xbox Game Bar on the PC, and Record that (Win+Alt+G) saves a clip of the last moments, on Android and desktop (#61).
- Windows: with Send system keys on, Alt+Tab, Alt+Esc, Alt+Print Screen and the Windows key go to the PC instead of to your own Windows, and Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Tab opens the stream controls (#71).
- Windows: while the stream has the keyboard, Alt+F4 goes to the PC too; Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Q still quits the stream.
Look
- Every slider in the settings, the stream menu's bitrate dialogs and the desktop controls is the thicker slider the on-screen controls use. Values, steps and remote control keys stay as they were (#61).
- A game without a cover in a PC's app grid shows its title instead of a grey box, with Rubylight and Sunshine-family hosts, on Android and desktop. Frontend exports, the PC tile of a running game and the Android TV home channel skip that grey box too (#61).
Fixes
- Fixed a crash when the app library reopened itself (for example after the system recreated it on a Fire TV) before the PC had answered.
- Quitting or leaving a stream with the Vulkan renderer no longer holds up the screen while the GPU finishes (#73).
- A problem report after "Nightjar isn't responding" now shows where the app was stuck, as code locations only (#73).
Tested. On a Retroid Pocket 6 streaming from an RX 7900 XT PC, Balanced at 120 fps on its 120 Hz display dropped no frames (5.5 to 5.9% before), and the median from a frame's arrival to its display fell from 6.2-8.0 ms to 2.1-2.2 ms. At 60 fps on 60 Hz it dropped none (2.6 to 2.8% before), and the median fell from 11.4-11.6 ms to 2.8 ms. Smoothest dropped no frames. A 60-second HEVC stream at 40 Mbps from the Rubylight 3.5.0 build to this build dropped 4 of 3,554 frames with no freezes, and the median from arrival to display was 8.3 ms (95th percentile 14.4 ms). On Windows, a stream to a test host passed with the new key chords sent as injected key presses. The AV1 crop was checked against frames the RX 7900 XT's AMF encoder made at odd sizes. A physical keyboard, the crop in a real stream and the Android TV home channel are not tested on hardware yet.
