What's new
Nightjar 4.4.0 turns this device into the PC's microphone, adds a List layout and controller tab switching to Home, and brings the Windows and Linux menus to 15 languages. On Windows, system keys reach the PC again, VRR survives a resume, and the PC can be shut down from Home. Audio no longer crackles when the PC's packets arrive in bursts.
Microphone only
- Microphone only: in a PC's menu, Nightjar sends this device's microphone to the PC with no picture, while the screen is off or another app is open. On Android it runs with a notification and its Stop, and a phone call pauses it until the call ends. On Windows and Linux it runs in a small window with Mute and Stop and leaves the mouse and keyboard to you. Needs Rubylight 3.4 or newer and permission to start apps on the PC.
Home
- Home has a third layout under View: List shows a line per game with a small cover, its store and when you last played it (from Steam or Playnite on a Rubylight PC), and works with touch, a D-pad and a controller (#59).
- L1 and R1 switch between Home, PCs and Settings (and Help on Windows and Linux) with a controller, round from the last tab to the first (#65).
- Home's View has a new Group by choice, Type: the games of every store in one part and your other apps (launchers like Steam or Playnite, the desktop) in their own. All games gets a matching Games filter.
- A paired PC that is off shows on Home as an offline card with Wake, also before it has shared its games once, and a PC that does not answer within 10 seconds shows as offline instead of Home loading on.
- A game a Rubylight PC has no cover for shows its title instead of a grey tile, and a game on a PC that is asleep or offline no longer shows as running.
- Home on Android no longer says "No PCs yet" for a few seconds after a start while your paired PCs are still answering; it shows that it is loading instead.
On-screen controls
- The on-screen controller has a Touchpad button (Settings, On-screen controls, Show Touchpad button) that clicks the touchpad of a PlayStation controller on the PC. While it is on, player 1 (the on-screen controller, or a handheld's built-in controls) connects as a PlayStation controller, so the PC gets a DualSense. A controller type you set for the pad still wins; other controllers keep theirs. In the modern style the button sits below Home and can be moved or hidden in the layout editor (#67).
- New setting Finger taps in Multi-touch: three- and four-finger taps run their actions in Multi-touch mode too. Off by default, so games that use three or four fingers still get them. In every touch mode a finger tap now counts only when all fingers land together, so a third finger while you hold two thumbs stays a normal touch (#61).
Windows and Linux
- Menus in Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), following the system language or the Language setting.
- Japanese, Korean and Chinese text no longer shows as boxes, and Cyrillic, Polish, Turkish and Vietnamese text is in one typeface: Nightjar uses the system's font for them (Yu Gothic UI, Malgun Gothic, Microsoft YaHei UI, Microsoft JhengHei UI or Segoe UI on Windows; Noto Sans CJK and Noto Sans or DejaVu Sans on Linux).
- Nightjar can shut down, restart or put the PC it runs on to sleep: press B on Home and choose, then confirm. It offers only what the PC supports (no Sleep on a Modern Standby PC). A living-room PC needs no mouse to turn off.
- Audio no longer crackles for a minute when the PC's audio packets start arriving in bursts. Nightjar now holds just enough extra audio to cover the bursts, and drops it again once they stop (#68).
- Windows: with Send system keys on, Alt+Tab, Alt+Shift+Tab, the Windows key and Win shortcuts, Alt+Esc and Ctrl+Esc go to the PC again instead of leaving the stream, windowed or fullscreen (#71).
- Windows: when Windows' echo cancellation stops during a stream, the microphone carries on without it and Nightjar says so, instead of going silent.
- Windows: a stream that opens behind another window takes the keyboard and mouse when you switch to it, without a click first.
- Windows: a resumed stream no longer drops a VRR monitor to V-Sync. The display check waits for the frame rate to settle, and no longer calls a monitor it saw waiting for frames fixed-refresh without testing a frame on it (#72).
- Windows: a stream the display check turned to V-Sync checks the display again now and then, and returns to presenting on arrival once frames restart the display's refresh.
Android
- Co-op and Files are translated into every language Nightjar offers.
Tested. On the RX 7900 XT PC with Windows 11, a 15-minute 1440p120 stream in desktop Nightjar showed 109,020 frames with none dropped, no late audio and 0.1 ms decode, and two resumes in a row stayed on VRR without a new display check. Microphone only ran there for 2 minutes minimized with Mute, Unmute and Alt+Tab to Windows, and on the Retroid Pocket 6 for 7 min 20 s with the screen off (21,975 packets, 5 concealed); a second device was told the microphone is in use, and without microphone permission nothing started. On the Retroid, the built-in controls with Show Touchpad button on reached the PC as a DualSense, and the PC saw the Touchpad button as touchpad clicks. With a controller, L1 and R1 switched tabs and the D-pad moved through the List layout on Windows. The Retroid showed List grouped by store, the games of a stopped PC greyed as asleep, and Co-op and Files in French and Japanese, and the Linux PC showed Home in Japanese and Chinese. System keys with a physical keyboard, Shut down and Restart, and echo cancellation stopping mid-stream are not tested on hardware yet.
