ChoralRoot 0.29 is about FM TONE sounding like the Digitone II: FIZZ's engine updates come to ChoralRoot's FM TONE
(four new filter types, DRIVE before the filter, the AHD amp envelope, bit and sample-rate reduction), a Digitone
sound you import brings its own reverb, delay and chorus sends, and the web device manager and the installer's Sounds
section import Digitone II FM TONE sounds with all of that. FM TONE's chord voices now share the two cores, as
FM6's, the VA's and P5's do. 0.29 replaces 0.28 as the web installer's default.
FM TONE: FIZZ's engine (new in 0.29)
- Four new filter types from the Digitone II, after OFF, LP12, HP12 and LP24: MULTI (low-pass, band-pass and
high-pass with a Morph between them), COMB+ and COMB- (a comb that rings on every harmonic, or on the odd
ones, with Feedback and a low-pass on the ring) and EQ (a bell with Gain and Q). - Hold SEL in the sound editor (the FILT group) to pick the filter type from a list: turn any knob or SELECT, let
go of SEL to keep it. The FILTER screen's third cell follows the type: Type on OFF to LP24 (it stops at LP24),
Morph on MULTI, LPF on the combs, Q on EQ; the second cell is Reso, Feedback or Gain. A comb with Feedback 0 and EQ
at Gain 0 pass the sound unchanged: turn them up to hear the filter. The filter picture draws each type and names it. - DRIVE before the filter (FILT 2's route, PRE or POST), per voice, as on the Digitone.
- The AHD amp envelope (attack, hold or "while the key is down", decay), on a new
AMP 2screen at the end of ENV. - CRUSH: bit reduction (16 bits down to 1) and sample-rate reduction (down to 1/64), before or after the filter,
on a newCRUSHscreen at the end of FILT. - The base-width filter after the main filter (BW route POST) as well as before it.
- FM TONE's chord voices share the two cores (Dual Core On), so the heavier sounds keep up: the FIZZ engine's
extra work, and a chord change that steals voices, now play without clicks on the unit.
The factory presets and your saved FM TONE sounds sound as they did: every new value starts off.
QUAD.md and the manual's FM TONE section have the details.
A sound's own sends (new in 0.29)
A sound load leaves the FX sends where they are, with one exception: a Digitone sound imported into FM TONE
carries its own reverb, delay and chorus sends, as it had them on the Digitone, and loading it sets its part's three
sends to them (FX on or off stays as it is). The next sound you load leaves them there. Saving such a sound keeps
the sends the part has at that moment.
Digitone II sounds in the web pages (new in 0.29)
The web device manager (Library > Add files) and the installer's Sounds section read Digitone II FM TONE sounds:
a .dn2pst preset, or a .dn2snd from a backup. Each comes in with its filter machine, AHD envelope, crush, drive
and its route, sends, portamento (the part's Glide) and modulation where the FM-1 has them, and a note for what it
cannot carry. WAVETONE, FM DRUM, SWARMER and MIDI sounds are refused with their machine's name. Digitone (one)
sounds now bring their sends and their DRIVE before the filter too.
Onto an FM-1 running 0.28 or older the pages write a copy that firmware plays: the new filters become LP12 or
OFF, the AHD envelope, crush and the sends are dropped, and the status line lists what was. Update to 0.29 first to
get the whole sound.
Installing
- The web installer's default is 0.29: press Install. Options > Version reads
ChoralRoot 0.29. - From 0.28 or 0.27: your settings, sounds, loops, favorites and FX routing stay.
- From 0.26.1 or older: this is also 0.27's update (0.27.md: the FX routing); from 0.25.1 or older
0.25.1.md "Installing" says what the update from those changes. - A Single core package for FM-1s that have trouble with Dual Core: the web installer's Advanced > Hardware
fallback. Options > Version then readsChoralRoot 0.29 1-core. - Signed builds: as since 0.26.1, GitHub built these packages from the tag's source and signed them;
0.26.1.md "Checking a package" says how to check one (choralroot-0.29.fwsc). - The SMK-37: the community test build stays
0.27-smk37.1(SMK37.md).
Going back to 0.28
The installer offers 0.28 under Other versions. Your settings, sounds, loops, favorites and FX routing stay, with one
exception: an FM TONE sound that uses something new in 0.29 (one of the four new filter types, DRIVE before the
filter, the AHD envelope, crush, the base-width filter after the main one, or its own sends, as every imported
Digitone sound has) plays as FM TONE's INIT sound on 0.28. The sound itself stays in its slot, untouched: install
0.29 again and it is back. FM TONE sounds that use none of these play as before.
ChoralRoot 0.29 for the M-VAVE FM-1 (identity FM-1_920).
Install from the browser at https://quixotic7.github.io/ChoralRootFM1/ (Chrome or Edge, the FM-1 connected by USB), or with the command-line installer: python3 tools/fm1_install.py choralroot-0.29.fwsc.
choralroot-0.29-1core.fwsc is the same firmware on one processor core, for an FM-1 that crashes or freezes with the standard package (the installer offers it under Advanced > Hardware fallback). Settings, sounds and loops stay when you switch between the two.
SHA256SUMS lists both packages and their apps. GitHub built and signed each from this tag's source (The Firmware Hub's shared workflow); check one with gh attestation verify choralroot-0.29.fwsc --repo Quixotic7/ChoralRootFM1 --signer-workflow zvenson/fm1-build/.github/workflows/build.yml. The package holds three JieLi AC79 SDK files (Apache-2.0); LICENSE, LICENSING.md and LICENSES.zip carry every licence. Installing firmware is at your own risk.
