New in this release

  • FTP auto export of logs: If the host's ethernet port is connected to a network, Shredos will request an IP address via DHCP, so that lftp can be used to automatically transfer nwipe's drive status logs to a ftp server on the local area network. By appending the following command to the kernel command line in /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /EFI/BOOT/grub.cfg shredos will automatically transfer log files to a ftp server. Example: lftp="open 192.168.1.60; user your-username your-password; cd data; mput nwipe_*.txt". A guide to configuring Shredos to automatically send logs to a ftp server, can be found in the README.md here ..transferring nwipe log files to a ftp server. Drive status logs and certificates to be added in the next version of Shredos.
  • Boot Progress indicator: Added a progress indicator when the linux image file is being loaded from USB. Only really useful for older V1/1.1 USB which can take 50 seconds to load. V2+ USB loads in less than a second with 5 seconds to boot in nwipe so the progress indicator will show as 100% on modern hardware.
  • Raid driver support: Also includes all the drivers mentioned in the pre-releases v2020.05.013_x86_0.31 and v2020.05.014_x86_0.31.
  • Nwipe v0.32: Nwipe has been updated to v0.32 and includes the following changes:
  • Ones wipe method added: Add ones (0xFF) wipe to the methods. Renamed Zero Fill to Fill with Zeros and the new ones wipe, is called Fill with Ones.
  • Ones verification added: Add ones verification to the methods. Renamed Verify Blank to Verify Zeros (0x00) and the new verification is called Verify Ones (0xFF).
  • Method information, moved and updated: Move method information from below the list of methods to the right of the method list. This allows better use of the screen space by allowing more methods to be added to the list, especially relevant to nwipe running as a standalone application on small distros such as shredos 2020 in frame buffer mode.
  • Remove redundant help text: Removed the old DBAN syslinux.cfg configuration hints as not relevant to nwipe. See nwipe --help or man nwipe for command line options.
  • Update error summary table: Add fdatasync errors to the error summary table.
  • Image persistence mitigation: During a wipe, you can now toggle between dark screen, blank screen and default blue screen by repeatedly pressing the b key. Dark screen, which is grey text on black background has been introduced to prevent TFT/LCD image persistence on monitors that are sensitive to that issue. However, according to this article grey text on a white background may be preferable. I will probably add that option in the next release along with possibly powering off the display as an additional option.
