Bugfixes and improvements
- Improved song saving and buffer exports with verified file replacement. Written data is checked before replacing the destination, and the previous copy is retained until the replacement is verified.
- Improved confirmation before quitting, including native macOS window closing and Windows update installation. Cancelling or failing to save keeps NBS open.
- Improved recovery backups for all open song tabs.
- Tabs with matching filenames have separate recovery files.
- Backups include metadata-only changes and songs emptied by editing.
- Autosaves and backups include selected or moved notes without placing the selection or changing undo history.
- Previous backups are kept until a new copy is verified.
- Improved recovery-file validation and restoration, including unique restored filenames and clearer reporting of files that could not be recovered.
- Added custom instrument limit checks when adding, importing, pasting and saving instruments, accounting for the selected NBS version and the extra slots needed by trumpet instruments in older formats.
- Fixed Save Options applying a format change before confirmation or ignoring a cancelled downgrade warning.
- Fixed close confirmations referring to the wrong song tab. Close Other Tabs and Close Tabs to the Right now stop when cancelled.
- Fixed empty, incomplete or invalid NBS files crashing NBS or disrupting the open song. Failed startup file opens no longer assign the failed filename to the current tab.
- Improved pattern export error handling. Exporting a pattern no longer marks the song as edited.
- Improved default filenames in Save dialogs and prevented duplicate
.nbsextensions. - Fixed data pack export paths on macOS and Linux, folder selection in sandboxed macOS builds, and incomplete output with non-ASCII descriptions.
- Reduced scoreboard conflicts between exported data packs with similar song names.
- Fixed Pack Instruments including unrelated temporary files in ZIP archives on Linux, and added clearer reporting of export failures.
- Fixed MIDI note tails collapsing onto the first layer of a channel or overlapping other notes.
- Fixed reference-audio volume changes not applying during playback.
- Added a clear error for unsupported Ogg reference audio, including Ogg Opus and Ogg FLAC. Ogg Vorbis and WAV remain supported.
- Fixed Sound Stopper range guides disappearing when the stopper is outside the visible layers and drawing beyond the editor boundaries.
- Improved Enter and Escape handling in dialogs. Enter activates the default action when a text field is not active, and Escape dismisses an open menu before closing the dialog.
- Fixed missed rapid mouse clicks on macOS.
- Fixed the macOS window jumping when moved between displays with different scaling.
- Added a native Command-W action to close the current song on macOS.
- Improved native dialog handling on macOS. (Credit to @samuelvenable)
- Changed the Windows installer and uninstaller to preserve user-added files in the installation directory.
- Updated Linux
.nbsfile associations to use the vendor-specific MIME type. - Improved startup performance and robustness, and reduced repeated text layout and drawing work.
- Fixed the update checker offering older releases as updates and updated its release-information URL.
- Clarified the program-directory warning with instructions for changing the default song folder.
- Added the missing custom sounds for the Living Millennium demo song.
Note for Linux users
- We cannot possibly extend our support to every Linux distro out there, but we will do our best to support as many as we can.
- Make sure to report any issues you encounter with your specific distro!
- File and folder dialogs now support XDG Desktop Portal. Keep
kdialoginstalled on KDE desktops orzenityon other desktops for the remaining dialogs and fallbacks. Some export functions also require7zip.
macOS build
- The minimum supported macOS version is now 12.0.
- Direct-download builds can check for updates in NBS and open the GitHub Releases page to download them.
- The macOS build is also available through TestFlight.
- To use your custom sound library in Quick Look, open NBS once after installing the update, then reopen the preview. Sharing the user sound library requires macOS 13 or later; macOS 12 previews use the app's bundled sounds.
