GoldenEye VR v0.5.6

Fixes for v0.5.4's SpaceWarp and anti-aliasing defaults: no more slow
motion below 120 Hz, smooth play on battery, and Bean's trees no longer
sparkle.

SpaceWarp slow motion

  • With SpaceWarp on (the default while Bean is), the game ran at 75% speed
at 90 Hz and 60% at 72 Hz
: SpaceWarp draws the game at half the display
rate, and the game took one 1/60 s step per drawn frame. Only 120 Hz was
    right.
  • The game now takes every step that real time has covered, as GoldenEye did
on the N64 at its own frame rates, so it runs at full speed at every
display rate. Sound gets the same fix: it ran short at 90 Hz and crackled.

Battery play

  • Unplugged, Quest caps the CPU at the level it picks from the game's load
and the GPU at 545 MHz (640 on the cable). SpaceWarp keeps the load low, so
busy views (the Dam tunnel, the guard towers) dropped frames and the audio
hitched; on the cable none of it showed.
  • The game now asks Quest for its "sustained high" CPU level as it starts.
On battery that lifts the CPU cap; on the cable nothing changes.
CpuLevel in goldeneye-vr.ini sets it (-1 none, 0-2, default 2).
  • Quest 3, Dam through the tunnel on battery: about 52 fps before, 59-60
    after.

Anti-aliasing and Bean's trees

  • Bean's pictures are now mipmapped, like texture packs. The pines that
sparkled and stair-stepped at a distance look solid, and the eyes draw a
    little faster.
  • Leaves, fences and other cutouts are now smoothed by anti-aliasing too.
  • Play → Screen → Anti-aliasing offers Off or 2x, and 2x is the
default. 4x looked the same as 2x and cost a lot of GPU time on battery; a
    saved 4x setting becomes 2x.

Validation

  • Checked on Quest 3: Dam on battery at Anti-aliasing off and 2x, 90 and 120
Hz with and without SpaceWarp (game speed and the audio queue counted),
first views of the tunnel and towers after a fresh install.
  • Not checked on a Quest 3S or at 72 Hz.
  • Host tests: the full port/tests suite.
