GoldenEye VR v0.5.4

Horde mode in Archives with Call of Duty-style points, Mystery Box and Wall
Buys; an optional AI ally (Natalya); tracked heads and arms for other
players; Application SpaceWarp for Bean; 4x anti-aliasing; and Oddjob's hat.

Multiplayer: the network protocol goes to 22. Every player in a lobby
needs v0.5.4.

Horde (PR #191, PR #193)

Pick Horde in the multiplayer launcher, solo or with up to four players.

  • Endless waves of GoldenEye's armed guards in Archives, using their own AI.
    Waves grow, with 15-second breaks between them and a countdown on screen.
  • Points: 500 to start, 10 per hit, 60 per kill, 100 per headshot kill. Your
    points show on the HUD and in the pause menu.
  • Mystery Box (950 points): a random weapon from twelve. Grip it or press
    B to take it. After a few rolls the box can move to another spot (refunded).
  • Wall Buys: six stations around the arena sell weapons and body armour;
    a weapon you already have refills its ammo at half price. Walk up and grip
    or press B.
  • Co-op revives; players who join mid-wave spectate until the next break.
    Everyone down ends the run, with results and a retry from the host.
  • Horde has its own friendly-fire setting; deathmatch settings are kept.

AI ally: Natalya (#194, optional, off by default)

Turn on AI ally (Natalya) under Play → Game rules…, or for co-op and
Horde under the host's Match options. One Natalya joins the party in
GoldenEye's missions and in Horde.

  • She follows the nearest living player, uses the game's own paths, doors and
    shooting, and engages enemies near you. Her shots never hurt players.
  • Choose her weapon (PP7 by default, up to the RC-P90 and automatic shotgun),
    aggression (cautious, normal, aggressive), damage (25-400%), health
    (25-1000%) or make her invincible.
  • In co-op and Horde the host runs her; she doesn't count toward waves, kills
    or revives, and everyone down still ends a Horde run.
  • She appears beside the party, never on a player, and doesn't respawn after
    dying; the next mission or Horde retry brings her back.
  • Missions with their own Natalya (Bunker II, Train, Jungle, Control) keep
    only her.

Other players' heads and arms (PR #190)

Other players' heads turn with their headsets, and their arms and guns
follow their controllers (two-bone arm IK, with a torso that turns more
slowly). Players who lose tracking fade back to the old animation.

Performance and image

  • SpaceWarp (Screen tab, on by default while Bean is on): the game draws
    half the frames and the headset makes the ones between from motion and
    depth, so Bean holds 120 Hz while turning. A little more latency; text
    locked to your view can shimmer. Untick it to turn it off; tick it to keep
    it on without Bean. Guards that share a model each keep their own motion,
    so bodies on the ground don't smear in the frames the headset makes.
  • Anti-aliasing (Screen tab: Off, 2x, 4x; 4x by default): smoother edges.
    4x is the most the Quest supports.
  • Turning with Bean is a little smoother: draws that differ only in unused
    bounds are joined (PR #192).
  • Launcher tooltips wrap instead of running off the right edge.

Mods

  • Oddjob's hat (PR #196): Mods → Get Oddjob's hat. Throwing knives look
    like the hat from 007 Nightfire in the Original, Bean and GoldenEye X hands,
    in flight and lying about. A small download, not in the APK.

Validation

  • Checked on Quest 3:
    • Horde solo, wave countdowns and the HUD line;
    • campaign co-op on two headsets with the AI ally at Dam;
    • SpaceWarp with Bean at 120 Hz on Dam: no missed app frames while turning
      in the profiler's runs, against 29-61 without it;
    • 4x anti-aliasing at 120 Hz with Bean and SpaceWarp;
    • Oddjob's hat in each hand set.
  • Host tests: the full port/tests suite (87 scripts), including the Horde
    director over 45 simulated minutes and the ally's network takeover.
  • Not yet checked in the headset: Horde co-op on two headsets, the Mystery
    Box and Wall Buys with more than one player, the ally in Horde, and a
    close look at the tracked arms.
