Media Player Classic PS5 1.5.2

Fixes from a full code review. Nothing changes in how you use the player.

Fixed

  • C++ exceptions inside the app.

    • Up to 1.5.1 the app's C++ runtime was half its own and half the console's. A C++ error thrown inside the app would have crashed it; Stella PS5 1.0 crashed that way starting any game.
    • The whole runtime is now the app's own, and the build refuses an eboot that takes any of it from the console.
    • A memory request that fails is now an error the code can handle, instead of stopping the app.
    • With Debug logs on, boot.log says [boot] exceptions: ok at the start, and a SIGSYS crash is in the crash log.
  • A thread the console refuses (it caps how many an app has) ended the app. Now that file fails to open with a message, or plays with less (no sound, no disc read-ahead, tone mapping on fewer threads), and the app runs on.

  • Blu-ray .sup and VobSub (.idx + .sub) subtitle files beside a film, or opened with File > Load Subtitle, never loaded. They load now. VobSub works from the console's own storage only, not from a share or a disc.

  • Bitmap subtitles (Blu-ray PGS, DVD, DVB) used too much memory. Every picture of every bitmap track was kept for the whole film: gigabytes by the end of a Blu-ray remux with many PGS tracks.

    • Over 256 MB, pictures of lines more than 30 s away are dropped and decoded again when needed.
    • A subtitle line replayed after seeking back ends at the right time again.
  • Updates.

    • update.journal now checks each replaced file's whole SHA-256, not its first MB. A journal left by 1.5.1 is still understood.
    • The "a newer version is available" notification no longer holds up the window.
  • Passwords on the screen. Network passwords no longer show in:

    • File > Open File...'s list of recent files;
    • the title bar;
    • Recent Files;
    • failure messages and notifications.

    The addresses still open with their passwords.

  • Damaged or made-up files.

    • A font with absurd glyph sizes isn't drawn at gigabyte sizes.
    • An audio file's cover over 8192 pixels a side isn't decoded; the logo shows instead.
    • File > Save Image of a file with %2F in its name keeps the picture in the screenshots folder.
  • Building. Changed assets and a new version number are rebuilt without a make clean. The unused CRT shaders left over from the emulator ports are out of the app.

Updating

  • From 1.5.1: Help > Check for updates offers 1.5.2. Or send MediaPlayerClassicPS5-v1.5.2.elf to your payload loader (port 9021).
  • Put the new ELF in your autoload when you can: it carries the new helper.

Files

  • MediaPlayerClassicPS5-v1.5.2.elf: send it to your payload loader (port 9021). It installs the app, then stays as the helper that unlocks it.
  • MediaPlayerClassicPS5-v1.5.2-PPSA99015.zip: the app folder, used by Help > Check for updates. You don't need to download it yourself.
  • mpc-ps5-v1.5.2-src.zip: the source.

Status

It passes 521 host tests, and it was run on a PS5 before release by the author: it opens and plays. If something doesn't work on yours, please open an issue, with Options > Miscellaneous > Debug logs on (the log is /data/mpcps5/logs/boot.log).
