v0.10.5 - Performance Update 2

Performance Update 2: much less jitter and far fewer micro-stutters

Smoother movement

  • Walking and turning are much steadier, for both the world and your gun. Several causes were fixed: a full object scan every 2 seconds, texture streaming waiting on the GPU, game ticks out of step with the headset, and dynamic resolution steps.
  • Virtual Desktop (VDXR): the game no longer waits for the VR runtime to finish a frame. In a 5-minute headset session at 120 Hz, ticks over 20 ms went from 70-150 per minute to 12-24, and to almost none in the last minutes.

Other fixes

  • New Blood on screen option in the Basic menu. Turning it off also removes the red arc that shows where a hit came from, because the game uses one setting for both. When it is on, blood stays at the edges of your view.
  • Two-handed aim: the filter responds almost twice as fast, the grip holds when you move only your left hand, and the barrel stays steady for up to 1.5 s if the left controller loses tracking. Two-handed spread is smaller (setting: spread).
  • No launch options needed any more: the mod adds ResX=2400 ResY=2500 by itself. This should prevent the "Rendering thread exception" crash some players had without them. We could not reproduce that crash here, so please send your log if you still get it.
  • Steam Link on Linux/Proton: the VR session no longer restarts every 14 seconds. This was only simulated on Windows, so logs from Linux are very welcome.

Tested so far: Virtual Desktop in a real headset, plus all 19 levels and the SteamVR compositor without a headset. Link and Steam Link have not been tried in a headset yet.

Still stuttering? Run collect_logs.bat and send the result. The HITCH lines show what causes each stutter.

Tip: if your image looks soft at 120 Hz, try 90 Hz. At 120 Hz the dynamic resolution can stay at its minimum.

Install: the mod updates itself when you start the game, then close and reopen the game to get the full update. For a new install, use 0-SpecOpsTheLineVR.zip and run install.bat.
