SaveState v3.1 — The Cloud Linking Update

SaveState 3.1 significantly improves the way backups can be moved, restored, and reused across different devices.

Cloud backups can now be downloaded even when the corresponding profile does not yet exist on the current computer. SaveState can link those backups to an existing profile or create a new local profile using the correct save location for that device.

The restore engine has also received major safety improvements, while Steam save detection, Dolphin support, automatic save-path discovery, Linux integration, and several parts of the interface have been refined.

What's New

Cross-Device Cloud Backup Linking

Cloud backups are no longer tied to a profile that already exists on the current device.

Downloaded backups can now be linked to the correct local save location, making Cloud Sync considerably more useful when moving between computers or operating systems.

  • Download Without a Local Profile: Cloud backups can be downloaded even when no matching SaveState profile exists on the device.
  • Automatic Profile Matching: SaveState attempts to match downloaded backups with compatible existing profiles.
  • Create Profiles From Cloud Backups: A downloaded backup can be used to create a new local profile.
  • Device-Specific Save Paths: Backups created on another computer or operating system can be linked to the save location used by the current device.
  • Persistent Profile Links: Once a cloud backup has been linked, SaveState remembers the relationship for future operations.
  • Manifest-Based Matching: Backup metadata is used to safely identify profiles and their expected save structure.
  • Multiple Save Path Support: Profiles containing more than one save location can be linked correctly.
  • Cross-Platform Restore Improvements: Single-file and single-folder backups are handled more reliably when source and destination paths differ between systems.
  • Cloud Access Without Existing Profiles: The Cloud panel can now be opened on a fresh SaveState installation before any local profiles have been created.

New Cloud Save Path Picker

Setting up a downloaded cloud backup is now easier.

A dedicated save-path browser allows the local destination to be selected without requiring separate file and folder workflows.

  • Select either a save file or save folder from the same interface.
  • Path validation is performed before the link is accepted.
  • Button styling and interaction now match the rest of the SaveState interface.

Safer Atomic Restore System

The standard restore engine has been redesigned to validate and stage restore operations before replacing existing saves.

SaveState now performs a complete preflight check before touching the current save data.

  • Restore Preflight Validation: Backup archives and destination paths are checked before restoration begins.
  • Unsafe Archive Protection: Suspicious archive paths and invalid restore layouts are rejected.
  • Overlapping Destination Detection: SaveState prevents restore configurations where destination paths could interfere with each other.
  • Duplicate Payload Detection: Archives containing ambiguous or duplicate restore data are rejected.
  • Complete Restore Validation: Multi-path profiles must contain the required data for every destination before any replacement occurs.
  • Staged Extraction: Backup data is extracted to temporary locations before the active saves are modified.
  • Atomic Installation: Fully prepared save data is moved into place only after extraction succeeds.
  • Automatic Rollback: If the final replacement fails, SaveState attempts to restore the previous save data automatically.
  • Legacy Backup Compatibility: Older single-file backups using filename-based matching remain supported.

This greatly reduces the possibility of a failed or malformed restore leaving a game with incomplete save data.

Improved Steam Save Detection

Steam userdata discovery has been made more reliable, particularly on systems containing multiple Steam accounts.

  • Steam installations can now be resolved using additional Windows registry locations.
  • The userdata directory can be automatically located when only the Steam AppID is known.
  • Numeric Steam account directories are inspected when no specific account has been selected.
  • Save files located directly inside Steam Cloud remote directories are detected more reliably.
  • Confirmed Steam Cloud save locations receive stronger ranking to reduce false positives.
  • Steam launcher and store URLs are parsed more consistently during drag-and-drop profile creation.

More Accurate Automatic Save Discovery

The save-path detection engine now handles sequels, numbered titles, abbreviations, and weak search results more intelligently.

  • Version-Aware Matching: Titles belonging to different sequels or numbered entries are less likely to be confused with each other.
  • Improved Title Normalization: Punctuation and formatting differences are handled without weakening sequel detection.
  • Numbered Acronym Support: Internal executable names such as numbered title acronyms can now be recognized when they clearly correspond to the selected game.
  • Better Abbreviation Matching: Trusted abbreviations are accepted without allowing unrelated version numbers to create false positives.
  • Reduced Search Noise: Clearly negative candidates can be removed when several strong save locations have already been found.
  • Improved Ranking: Strong title and save-file evidence now has a greater influence on the final results.

Improved Dolphin Emulator Support

Dolphin profile discovery has been expanded to support considerably more configurations across Windows, Linux, and macOS.

SaveState can now recognize Dolphin user directories from:

  • Portable Dolphin installations
  • Windows registry configuration
  • Redirected Windows Documents folders
  • DOLPHIN_EMU_USERPATH
  • AppData locations
  • XDG directories
  • Flatpak installations
  • Legacy Linux paths
  • macOS locations

Additional improvements include:

  • Dolphin StateSaves can be attached to the appropriate game profiles.
  • Profiles discovered across multiple Dolphin user directories can be merged instead of appearing as duplicates.
  • Path normalization and duplicate handling have been improved.

Restore Dialog Improvements

The backup selection interface has received several usability improvements.

  • The newest backup is now visually emphasized.
  • Older backups are separated by an OLDER BACKUPS section.
  • Backup tooltips provide clearer contextual information.
  • Locked backup indicators are preserved correctly.
  • Double-clicking a backup immediately selects it for restoration.

Improved Linux Folder Opening

Opening folders from packaged Linux builds is now considerably more reliable.

SaveState now handles environments such as AppImage and PyInstaller more carefully and can fall back between multiple native Linux mechanisms when opening a directory.

Support includes:

  • D-Bus file manager integration
  • xdg-open
  • gio
  • systemd-run
  • KDE and GNOME file managers
  • Environment cleanup for packaged application builds

This prevents bundled libraries and application environments from interfering with the system file manager.

Improved Automatic Path Confirmation

The dialog shown when SaveState automatically finds a single save location has been redesigned.

The new confirmation window:

  • Uses SaveState's theme-aware interface.
  • Displays long detected paths more clearly.
  • Allows the detected path to be selected and copied.
  • Provides clearer Yes, No, and Cancel actions.
  • Integrates more consistently with keyboard and controller navigation.

Additional Reliability and Security Improvements

Several smaller changes improve security and general reliability.

  • OAuth callback logging no longer exposes URL query information in normal server access logs.
  • OAuth error handling avoids unnecessarily exposing raw callback details.
  • Launcher URL validation is now centralized instead of being implemented separately across drag-and-drop workflows.
  • Steam rungameid and store URLs are handled more consistently.
  • Blank Win32 icon renders are detected before they can be stored in the icon cache.
  • Existing invalid blank icon caches are automatically invalidated so another extraction method can provide a usable icon.

SaveState 3.1 at a Glance

  • Download cloud backups without an existing local profile
  • Link cloud backups to device-specific save locations
  • Create new profiles directly from downloaded cloud backups
  • Persistent and manifest-based cross-device profile linking
