Dog Green is Open
Omaha Beach has been rebuilt. Not retuned - rebuilt.
The landing was always the set piece this mod could not quite deliver: the ramp dropped, men died
somewhere ahead of you, and you walked up a quiet beach. This release is about closing the gap
between what that scene is supposed to be and what it actually was.
The landing
The ramp drop is a different thing now. Men die in front of you and you hear them do it - the
five Rangers in your boat have never made a sound in this mod until today. The camera stops behaving
like a tripod. Something happens to one of them that we will let you find on your own.
Under the water. The plunge is no longer a hold and a slow pan. There is a sequence down there
now, and things to see in it. The water itself has been rewritten: real depth in the murk, colour
that falls away with distance the way it does underwater, and light that behaves like light through
water instead of a filter laid over the screen.
You can see the bluff. The guns that have been killing you were beyond the fog the entire time -
literally not drawn. When the ramp comes down, you can see what you are running at. It goes back to
normal once you are in the water.
Voices that have never been heard
Medal of Honor shipped in 2002 with finished, voice-acted, subtitled Omaha dialogue that no code in
the game has ever played. Not missing files - recorded, mixed, subtitled, and left unwired.
Twenty-one of those lines are now in the game, placed where they belong, spoken by men who are
actually there to say them. Some are shouted orders that will tell a squad what to do. Several are
the sound of a landing going badly.
A handful of others were written by the developers with the call already in the script and simply
commented out. Those are back too.
Fixes you will notice
- Men on the sand no longer stand upright in the open under machine gun fire
- The landing craft you are thrown out of now sinks instead of only burning
- The pale blocks in the water are gone
- Blood on the glass behaves like liquid on a lens rather than a red tint
- The crosshair stays out of the way for the whole opening
- Incoming fire cracks past you at the right level, and the shell that ends the ride is not competing
with the score
Under the hood
Quieter, but load-bearing: a class of arithmetic bug that had been silently disabling whole features
for weeks (one of them since the day it shipped), a sound-mixing fault that stacked the same effect
on top of itself once per player, a console crash on dedicated servers, and a rendering fault that
drew invisible carrier geometry as solid grey boxes.
Notes
Omaha is the map this release is about. Everything else is unchanged and safe to play as before.
If something sounds wrong in the mix - too quiet, too loud, talking over the music - say so. Most of
the audio in this release is tunable live from the console and we would rather hear it from you than
guess.
Dog Green is the worst of it. Keep moving off the beach.
