Highlights

Fill area baseplates

The baseplate dialog has a new Fill area mode, now the default. Enter the size of the area to fill, such as a drawer, and your print bed. The bed can be picked from a list of popular printers, with their bed sizes shown, or entered by hand.

  • The grid is fitted to the area and split into pieces that fit the bed, sized as evenly as possible. Pieces keep the same xy clearance at the seams as bins do.
  • The grid can be centered or pushed to a side on each axis. Space left over can take a row of half cells instead of solid padding: 21 × 42 mm cells along the edges, 21 × 21 mm in the corners. This is on by default.
  • The preview spreads the pieces apart so the seams are easy to see. The final plate is assembled in place.

Plate drawing in the baseplate dialog

The dialog shows a drawing of the plate, or of the pieces in fill area mode, with sockets drawn according to the plate type. The caption gives the plate size in units and in mm and the padding, so you can check the actual size before generating.

Labels on bin tabs

  • Label tabs can carry text and an icon. Compartments in a custom grid can have their own label.
  • Labels can be a thin outline for multi color printing (the default), engraved, or embossed. Text is bold by default.
  • Each label gets a user parameter, so the text can be edited later.

Hollow and tilted label tabs

  • Tab top angle tilts the tab top down toward the front, so the label faces the front of the bin.
  • Hollow tab turns the tab into a shell, saving material. It's on by default for Shelled bins.
  • A hollow tab is opened through the bin's outer back wall. Open through side walls also opens it through the outer side walls and the corners between them. The openings follow the tab's slopes through the wall.

Joint origins

A new Add joint origins option, off by default, puts a joint origin at the bottom of each bin foot and baseplate socket. Joining the two seats a bin in its socket.

See how a model was generated

Right click a generated bin or baseplate and pick Gridfinity settings. It shows the generator version, the user parameters driving the model and the dialog settings it was generated with.

Other changes

  • Gaps between bin feet along the outer walls are curved up instead of leaving flat overhangs.
  • Improved naming of the features on the timeline

Experimental

  • Bins and baseplates are driven by user parameters: the shared gfBaseWidth, gfBaseLength and gfHeightUnit, plus per bin gfBin<n>_heightU and per plate padding parameters. Change a parameter and the models follow.
  • Shelled bins have thicker walls. They now use the full wall thickness, 1.2 mm by default instead of 0.95 mm, which also fixes the step under the lip. The floor and feet walls are 0.25 mm thicker as well.
  • The baseplate dialog opens in Fill area mode. Switch the sizing mode to go back to entering cell counts.
  • New user parameters are added to the design the first time you generate.
