Patch Notes: Morrowind bodies move like people in third person
Walking and running
- Morrowind-bodied characters in third person now walk and run on their own legs. Each foot is set down on the ground where it lands and stays there until it lifts, so feet no longer slide. The hips, chest, arms and head move with each step.
- The legs follow where the body actually goes. Walk into a wall and the legs stop. Strafe or walk backwards and the legs step that way, for other players' characters too.
- Walking, running and sneaking each have their own posture, and sneaking while standing still crouches. Strafing turns the hips toward the direction of travel, walking backwards is a backpedal, and turning on the spot steps the feet around.
- The stride fits the pace and the body. Men and women each have their own gait, and Argonians and Khajiit share the beast gait. Every race's height and build sets the stride.
- Slopes are walked on the slope. Sudden changes of direction are much smoother: the body dips far less, and the feet no longer jump in the air.
Carrying a weapon
- One-handed weapons hang down and away from the side at rest, and a running character carries the blade low with its point trailing behind.
- Two-handed weapons are held in a low guard with both hands at rest, and carried at the hip at a run.
- Paired weapons are held out from both sides at rest, and swept back behind the body at a run.
- Staves and spears are held in both hands on the haft, and bare fists have their own guard.
- Wrists stay in a natural range, and blades stay clear of the ground and the body, including between walking and running.
- Bows, crossbows, thrown weapons, spells and a torch keep their original arm animations. The legs and body still use the new gait.
Melee attacks
- Third-person slashes, chops, thrusts and backhands now use the whole body. The hips and chest turn into the blow, the weight shifts forward, the lead foot steps in, and the weapon leads with its edge.
- The weapon moves smoothly through each attack without flipping, and meets its target at close to full speed.
- Two-handed blows keep both hands on the weapon. A left-hand blow is the mirror of a right-hand one, and a one-handed weapon held alone strikes with its own hand.
- The legs keep walking during an attack, so the body no longer stops mid-stride and slides. An attack that is interrupted, or cut short by the next one, flows into what comes next.
Settings
- This is on by default. To turn it off and go back to the original animation clips, use the Morrowind Body Motion switch in Settings, under Combat > With Morrowind data. The switch's text is now translated into every language the game ships.
