Patch Notes: The King's Gambit - armies and kings at the tavern's card table

A new game at the card table

  • Sit at any tavern's card table and press Play The King's Gambit on the Hold'em or Iliac Hand panel to start a battle of armies and kings against the tavern's regulars.
  • Choose whom to challenge. Each regular plays at a tier, from Amateur to Grandmaster, and their row tells you their army's size, their potions, how often they blunder and the least they will play for.
  • Put down a stake of 1, 2 or 5 times that least stake. Win and you take back twice your stake. A regular can only pay out so much in a night, and after that they play for fun.
  • Pick one of the Iliac Bay's four kings and build an army of up to 12 units from 300 points. Every unit wears its Iliac Hand card's picture.
  • Fight on a board laid across the table. Each turn you have two actions: move a piece, strike, or give it a potion. Fire, spikes and poison spread across the board as the rounds pass. Fell the other king to win, and guard your own.
  • Play with the mouse, a finger, the keyboard or a gamepad. On a touchscreen, a press snaps to your pieces and asks you to confirm a move or a strike.
  • Forfeiting or standing up while gold is down asks you twice, and you cannot save with gold on the table.
  • A built-in guide and glossary explain every rule. The game's words read in all thirteen fully translated languages.
  • You can turn the game off in Settings, on the World tab.

The board, raised

  • The board now stands on the table. Walls are stone blocks, pillars are columns, and water lies low with ripples drifting across it.
  • Every piece is its card standing in a stand. Your stands are pale, the regular's are dark with notched rims, and the kings stand on brass. A bar over each card shows its health.
  • Pieces walk the path they take, lunge at their foes, and shake and flash red when they are hit. A potion makes a card glow green. The damage or the healing rises over the piece as a number, and shots fly across the board.
  • A fallen piece topples and slides into its owner's pile beside the board, so you can count the losses at a glance.
  • Fire flickers, spikes stand up and poison bubbles. A warning pulses where a new hazard will appear.
  • When the battle starts, the cards are dealt onto the board one at a time, and your view leans over the table so the whole board fits beside the panel. Fold the panel to give the board more room.
  • With reduced motion turned on, a hit piece does not shake.

Sounds at the table

  • The King's Gambit now sounds as the mod does: dice as the game opens, coins as a stake goes down, a click as a unit joins or a piece is chosen.
  • Monsters cry as they move and strike, swords swing and bowstrings loose, spells crackle, potions bubble, and a fallen piece hits the cloth. Fire, spikes and poison each bite with their own sound.
  • A win ends in a fanfare (and the clink of coins when gold was down); a loss in a groan. Forfeiting is silent, as in the mod.

Play another player

  • Online, sit at a tavern's card table and The King's Gambit offers the board's two seats: press Sit at the board, build your army, then press Ready. When both players are ready, the table lays the board and deals both armies.
  • The table runs the game: it lays the board, rolls every die and keeps a turn clock of 60 seconds. A turn that runs out ends as End turn does; three in a row stand that player up and give the game to the other.
  • Your king's row is always at your own edge of the board, and the board lies in the same place on the cloth for both players.
  • The other player's moves play out one at a time, half a second apart, so you can follow each.
  • Anyone else in the tavern can watch a game: the board stands on its cloth for everyone near the table.
  • Play a regular instead takes you back to the tavern's regulars at any time.

Gold games and the season board

  • At a tavern's red table, a realm character can play another player for gold: stake 10, 50, 200, 1,000 or 5,000 gold, the same as your opponent. The realm holds both stakes, and the winner takes the whole pot.
  • Every online game between two registered accounts counts on The King's Gambit's season board. Press Season board to see the top ten and your own rank.
  • The season's first player, after ten counted games against five different opponents, wears the Grandmaster title.

Safe with your gold, clear on every screen

  • No single press loses a staked game: a gamepad's Start button and a stray finger on a touchscreen now ask before you stand up, as Escape does.
  • Leaving the board just as a game is dealt cancels that game, and both stakes go home.
  • If your connection drops mid-game, the panel tells you how the game ended when you are back.
  • A move followed at once by End turn now goes through, and the realm's own reason is shown when it cannot hold your stake.
  • On a gamepad with the Enhanced Plus hotbar, the d-pad moves the board's cursor during a battle.
  • On a phone, the turn clock shows first, and anyone watching a game has Stand up, Play a regular instead and More.
  • A piece's information now names the foes it can strike and any hazard under it.
  • The online board's buttons read correctly in every translated language.

Nine new cards

  • The Grizzly Bear, the Sabretooth Tiger, the Spider, the Slaughterfish, the Mummy, the Frost Daedra, the Fire Daedra, the Archer and the Ranger join the Iliac Hand set, each with its own painted picture.
  • Their creatures drop them, as every other creature drops its own card - and every creature in the game now has one.

The cards in your language

  • Every Iliac Hand card's rules and flavor text now read in your chosen language, in all thirteen fully translated languages.

What's Changed

  • KG0-KG3, AUDIT KG and KG-SET: The King's Gambit - designed, decided, its law, its innkeeper's play, audited; the nine in the Iliac set; the first playable game at the card table by @Lattymoy in #864
