Patch Notes: Gathering sounds and feel
Every gathering act has its own sounds
- Felling a tree: the axe's swing and its bite into the trunk (a Clean Cut rings fuller), the tree groaning when it starts to give, its crash as it lands, and the logs gathered up.
- Mining: the pick striking rock, the ring of a strike on the glint, and rubble as a vein or boulder gives out.
- Herbs and the Basket: leaves rustling as you kneel, the herb pulling free (or bruising), and the Basket's find.
- Skinning: the knife's strokes climbing along the line, a tear when it slips, and the pelt peeling free.
- Net fishing: the throw, the splash where the net lands, the water by the floats while you wait, the tug, the catch fighting as you haul, and the net coming in.
- Your goods going into the bag, a clean finish's chime, and a chime for a new rank.
Each blow sounds when it lands
- An axe or pick blow now sounds the moment the tool hits, not when you press the button. Its sound, its weight and its chunks all land together, at any frame rate.
- Each sound comes from where it happens: the tree, the vein, or where your net landed.
- The tool stays in your hand through your last swing, and the tree starts to fall (or the vein crumbles) as that last blow lands, instead of the moment you press. Starting on the next tree or vein straight away doesn't cut that last blow short.
Blows land with weight
- On the Enhanced skin, each axe or pick blow dips your view and your hands slightly as it lands, a little deeper for a Clean Cut or a strike on the glint, and always lighter than a weapon technique's hit.
- It follows Technique camera motion (Settings > Accessibility > Motion), so you can turn it down or off there. It never plays when your system asks for reduced motion.
Veins crack and shed chunks
- A vein or a Motherlode cracks as you work it, and so does a boulder's loose stone: the cracks spread out from its middle with each blow until it breaks.
- Every blow knocks chunks of ore loose toward you. They land on the ground where they fall, slopes included, lie there a moment and sink away. The blow that breaks the vein sheds the most.
- If you stop before it breaks, the cracks close up again. Like the vein itself, the cracks are yours alone.
See and hear other players gather
- Other players now see you at work. Every body type shows your tool swinging. Class sprites also show you kneeling and throwing your net, Eye Of The Beholder sprites show the throw, and Morrowind bodies crouch where you kneel.
- They hear it too, from where you are working: each chop and strike as it lands, the herb pulled, the knife, the net thrown and landing, the water while it waits, the tug and the haul. A blow you take back with Escape isn't heard.
- The still paperdoll (shown while a sprite loads, or with other players' class sprites turned off) doesn't show it, but you still hear it.
- The Attack sounds switch for other players now covers their gathering sounds too.
Settings
- The new sounds are part of Enhanced sounds on the Features screen. With it off, or on the Classic skin, gathering plays Daggerfall's own sounds as before, now timed to the blows.
Fixes
- The veins, boulders, herbs and trees around you no longer blink out for a frame when you finish gathering one of them or when the day turns.
