Patch Notes: The Eltheric Ocean - its name, its depths, its gathering, its Overworld and its chart

The Overworld past the Veil

  • You can now rise into the Overworld while sailing the Eltheric Ocean, as you can in the Iliac Bay. Open your chart (the map key) and press Overworld (O), or press O while the chart is open.
  • From the Overworld, click the sea to sail there at the helm, or click a port or ruin you have charted to travel to it. Charted ports further off are shown at the edge of the screen with their distance. Ruins appear as they do in the Bay: a "?" until you have charted or found them.
  • An island you chart (by sight, a harbourmaster's chart or a corsair's papers) shows on the Overworld at once, without moving first.
  • A fast journey past the Veil now slows while the land ahead is still loading, so you no longer outrun the world.

Enemies on the Overworld

  • Enemy bands now roam the Eltheric isles, and with Naval Combat on, pirate raiders sail its open sea. The Overworld shows both as it does in the Bay. They chase you the same way, and your journey slows as they close in.
  • A raider past the Veil comes as one of the Eltheric's own corsairs, a ship you fight at sea: the sea's names, the black flag, and a hold as rich as the waters she sails. For a newer captain, the deeper the water, the bigger the ship she may be.
  • Online, other players now see a band or raider chasing you past the Veil.

The Eltheric Ocean

  • The sea past the Veil is now called the Eltheric Ocean, its proper name. It used to be called the "Etheric Sea". The chart, the harbourmasters, the crossing, your captain's log and the legends now all use the new name.

Real depth under the water

  • The water past the Veil used to be only a stride deep, with the seabed just under the surface. It now has a real seabed: shallow by each island's shore, then dropping to the open ocean floor about two hundred metres down, as deep as the Iliac Bay's open sea.
  • You can swim, dive and surface there as you do in the Bay. The seafloor's plants, fish, creatures and sunken loot now appear past the Veil too.
  • The ocean holes (the pits down into drowned dungeons) still appear only in the Iliac Bay.

Gathering on the islands

  • Herbs, trees, ore veins and boulders on the islands past the Veil can now be gathered. They used to stand there but answered "There is nothing here to gather". Fishing in the Eltheric Ocean now works too.
  • Gathering there works as it does in the Bay: each spot gives its full finds only once three players (with accounts at least a week old) have gathered there.
  • Motherlodes still rise only in the Iliac Bay, where the Watch can see you strike them.

The chart, easier to read

  • The chart's names are now in the game's own enhanced font. They used to be drawn in a fallback serif.
  • Names are drawn after every island marker, with a dark outline, so a marker can no longer cover a name.
  • Each name sits on whichever side of its island is clear. Names and haunt labels no longer stand over each other, and your ship's label takes the clearest spot.
  • A depth ruler runs along the top of the chart. It names each stretch of water in view that has room for its name: the Shallows, the Reaches, the Deep Aether, the Abyss, the Veil and the world's edge.
  • The scale bar now sits in the key below the chart, so it no longer hides islands.
  • The chart's words follow the language you chose, in each fully translated language. The sea's own names (the Eltheric Ocean, its depths, its island types and compass directions) are still in English for now.

New island icons

  • Each island type has its own shape as well as its own colour:

    • a port is round with a harbour dot
    • a ruin is a diamond
    • a wild isle is a peak
    • a bare rock is a cross

Ruins and wild isles no longer differ by red and green alone.

  • Zoom in and larger islands show their real size around the icon. Veilhaven is ringed in gold.

  • A key under the chart explains every icon.

Highlighted areas

  • Each depth band is its own shade of water, lightest by the Veil and darkest in the Abyss. A league grid replaces the old background stars, which didn't move when you dragged the map. The edge of the world is marked.
  • A legend's haunt is a red-washed square while she sails, and hatched grey while she lies sunk. When enough of the square is in view, her name and status ("Her haunt", "Sunk - she will rise again") sit in a corner of it, chosen to hide as few islands as possible. When you're zoomed far out, her name alone stands above the square.
  • Your ship is a white arrow in a brass ring, marked on the ruler too. When she's off-screen, an arrow at the chart's edge points to her and says how far away she is.
  • Point at or tap an island to ring it, draw a bearing line to it from your ship, and show a card with its name, type and distance.

Fixes

  • The chart now fits the screen at any size. On a phone held sideways, the key, the zoom buttons and Ship are no longer pushed off the bottom. On a phone held upright, the chart's title wraps instead of being cut off.
  • Naming an island no longer makes the chart jump.
  • The chart no longer gets stuck in a fallback font if it opens before the game's fonts finish loading.
  • On phones the Close and zoom buttons keep their size, and the zoom buttons grey out at the closest and farthest zoom.
  • Your Ship can no longer be boarded from past the Veil. Boarding it there carried you to the Iliac Bay without the crossing. Leaving it still takes you back to where you boarded.

What's Changed

  • ELTHERIC + ETHER-DEEP + ETHER-NODES + ETHER-OW, ETHER-CHART2 + AUDIT: the Eltheric Ocean - its name, its seabed, its gathering nodes, its Overworld and its chart by @Lattymoy in #847
