Patch Notes: Crafting from raw goods, by the piece, in five crafts - tempering what you wear, and better Repair Kits

Craft straight from what you gathered

The anvil, the workbench, the loom, the mason's bench and the jeweller's bench can now make a piece from raw goods. Say you hold the Iron, Pine Logs, Copper and Rat Pelts for a Steel Longsword, but none of the ingots, charcoal or leather. The recipe reads "can make from raw", and its box shows what will be refined first and from what. One press of Craft smelts, burns and cures everything it needs, then makes the sword. Each refining step still earns its own XP, and anything left over stays in your Stores.

  • Refining for a craft costs no extra station fee. You pay only the craft's fee.
  • It never refines a material into a lower tier. It won't burn Ghostwood for Charcoal or cure a Dragonling hide into Hardened Leather; do that by hand.
  • When you are short of something, the box names the raw good you need (e.g. "short of Iron x2"), not the ingot.
  • When your Stores have no room for what it would refine, the box says so.
  • If a refining step is refused, the message names the step where the chain stopped.

Pick a piece, then what it's made of

The anvil, the workbench, the loom and the fire now list each piece once (Longsword, Cuirass, Short Bow, Straps, Hunter's Stew) instead of one row per material. Pick a piece and its box offers the materials it can be made of. One is already chosen from what you hold, in this order: the material you last crafted with here; the highest tier you can make now, or from raw goods; the one you hold the most of.

  • Materials you can't make yet are dimmed. Those past your rank say the rank they need ("Daedric - rank 90").
  • The anvil's Weapons, Armour, Tools and Repair Kits are 39 pieces, not 308 rows behind a metal picker.
  • The first-make bonus (+500 XP) is now paid once per piece per tier, not once per material. Your first Adamantium, Ebony, Orcish or Warforged Longsword (all tier 6) pays it, and the rest of that tier don't. A Wand pays it once for Ironwood or Ghostwood, and Arrows once for any fletching. Pieces you made before still count.

Five crafts instead of eight

The eight crafting professions are now five. Smithing takes in Jewelcrafting, Building is Carpentry and Masonry together, and Provisioning is Alchemy and Cooking together. Outfitting and Enchanting stand as they were. A Ring still counts as jewelcraft and the Gemcutter is still its choice - but the XP goes to Smithing.

  • A merged craft keeps the higher of its two XP totals.
  • Each rank's choice is the higher craft's where it chose, else the other's. If you chose under both at the same rank, you keep the higher craft's choice and may change it once for free - no Marks, in effect at once.
  • A merged craft offers four choices at a rank, each named for the craft it acts on.
  • You may still take two crafts past Journeyman - now two of five.
  • The stations name the craft: "Building 10" at the workbench and the mason's bench, "Smithing 25" at the jeweller's bench, "Provisioning" at the fire and the alchemy station.

Temper and reforge what you wear

  • Temper at an anvil (Smithing) or a loom (Outfitting): a weapon, a piece of metal armour, leather armour or clothing, one quality step better - Crude to Standard, Standard to Fine, Fine to Superior. Found or made, as long as it is Rare or below. A found piece counts as Standard.
  • A temper costs half the piece's recipe's main material, rounded up (a Steel Longsword: 2 Steel Ingots; a Leather Cuirass: 3 Cured Leather), needs that recipe's rank, and pays craft XP.
  • A tempered piece gains condition and loses a little weight. A crafted piece's record is re-signed at its new quality, so the Market shows what it is - and a Fine crafted piece tempered to Superior gains the Superior's Magic roll.
  • Legendary, Aetheric, artifact and Sigil pieces can't be tempered, and a Masterwork keeps its maker's quality.
  • Reforge with Essence: from Enchanting 50, an enchanting station rolls one line of a known Magic piece again for 2 Arcane Essence, a Rare's for 5 - the Mages Guild's Reforge, paid in Essence. Once a piece is reforged, only that line again. No XP.
  • Take a worn piece off first. A shop's station charges its usual fee.

Better Repair Kits

  • Repair Kits made at an anvil now come in a quality, like other crafted pieces. A Superior or Masterwork kit mends a weapon or armour up to 90% of its condition; any other kit still stops at 75%. Each use still mends a quarter of the piece's condition.
  • The kit's card says its quality and how far it mends. A Masterwork kit carries its maker's name.
  • Kits you already own, and field kits found in loot, work as before.

What's Changed

  • CRAFT0-CRAFT5: fewer moving parts, a crafter worth seeking - the design record, the chain, patterns, five crafts, tempering and reforging, the consumables by @Lattymoy in #684
