Patch Notes: Meadow grass
A new look for the grass
- The grass can now be a meadow made from new hand-drawn sprites: tall and short green tufts, flowering tufts, dry tufts and bushes, mixed across the land.
- Every tuft and bush grows to its own size. Whole patches run taller or shorter, so the land no longer looks the same everywhere.
- Flowers gather in lush patches and dry grass in poor ones. Bushes turn up here and there, from shin-high to shoulder-high.
- The meadow doesn't turn to face you. Each tuft and bush stands on crossed cards like the low-poly trees, so you see it from every side as you walk round it, and a low sun lights one face more than the other.
- The meadow follows the ground: its greens take the colour of the grass they grow on, so it fits every climate and season (flowers keep their own colours), and on a hillside each tuft stands on the slope instead of hanging over it.
- The meadow sways in the wind the way the trees do. Bushes are stiffer than grass, as the world's bushes are.
- The meadow does about the same vertex work as the old pixel tufts.
Fixes
- Crossing into a new part of the map no longer makes all the grass jump to a new pose in the wind. The trees no longer jump there either.
- Pixel-style grass tufts no longer swap to different pictures when you cross into a new part of the map.
Settings
- Grass is now off by default. Turn it on under Settings › Grass with Full, Half or Quarter. If you had it on Full before, it is off after this update until you turn it back on; Half and Quarter are kept.
- Grass › Style defaults to Meadow. Pixel (the old tufts) and Smooth are still there.
- Wind › Trees sway is now just Sway: it moves the grass as well as the trees, and turning it off holds both still.
