Patch Notes: Balanced shadows, nearby quests, loitering online, campfire kits and rations for everyone

Steady shadows, balanced

  • Shadows no longer go too dark, and candles no longer blow out to white, with Steady shadows on.
    • Your own silhouette was cast into every lamp around you. In a tavern these stacked into a black mass at the crosshair, and the darker picture made every lamp's bright spot go white.
    • It now falls only from the two lamps nearest you, as with Steady shadows off. Those two are still redrawn every frame, so nothing flickers.
  • Calmer eye is now its own switch, off by default (Settings, Features, Enhanced lighting, beside Steady shadows). It used to come bundled with Steady shadows, so dark rooms stayed dark and candle glare lingered for seconds. Turn it on if the picture still seems to breathe brighter and darker.

Nearby quests

  • New Nearby quests switch (Settings, Features, World), on by default. Quests from guilds, temples, nobles and townsfolk now send you to towns and dungeons near where you took them, not anywhere in the region.
  • The range grows with your level:
    • At level 1, a quest stays within about 10 map squares, a day or two on foot.
    • Each level adds 4 squares. By level 15 or so, anywhere in the region can come up, as in Daggerfall.
  • A quest always still starts:
    • If fewer than three dungeons of the right kind are close, it picks from the nearest three.
    • A town quest that needs a building no nearby town has looks twice as far, then anywhere in the region.
  • Quests you already have keep their places. Off is Daggerfall's pick, unchanged. Online, each player's own switch decides their own quests.

Loiter anywhere

  • You can loiter online again, with no camp, fire or bed. When the rest window can't let you rest (no fire or bed nearby, a town's street, or a building that won't let you sleep), it now offers Loiter.
  • You can loiter at a fire too: while settling in to rest, press 3 (or your Loiter key), or click Loiter Instead.
  • Loitering works as in Daggerfall: choose the hours, up to your Loiter limit.
    • It heals nothing and doesn't count as a night's sleep.
    • Monsters can interrupt it, and it commits no crime.
    • Online it doesn't bring on night or shorten a quest's waits.

Campfire kits and rations for everyone

  • General Stores and Pawn Shops always stock a Campfire Kit and a stack of 99 Rations, with Climates & Calories on or off. Online they never run out. Offline they sell out until the shop restocks the next day, like the rest of the shelf.
  • With Climates & Calories Off:
    • Rations and other food can always be eaten, never refused as "not hungry". They give back stamina by how filling they are (rations about a quarter of your stamina). A putrid one is still refused.
    • A Campfire Kit can be placed, rested at, cooked at, stoked and packed. Only a fire's warmth still needs Climates & Calories.

What's Changed

  • Integration 2026-10-04: Steady shadows balanced, Nearby quests, Loiter anywhere, Endless provisions by @Lattymoy in #597
