Patch Notes: A fairer law
The watch
- The watch no longer hunts a bad name out of thin air. Before, a low standing with the law brought guards after you every couple of minutes in town, even with nobody around. Now a guard has to actually see you. If you are known to the watch (a poor standing in that region, or banished from it), a guard who spots you stops you: pay a fine on the spot, come quietly to court, or refuse and be chased. After a stop the watch leaves you be for a while, and after you answer for it (a fine, a sentence, an acquittal) you get a day's grace.
- The watch waits for a fight to end. A guard no longer stops you in the middle of a fight or a duel.
- Invisibility hides you from the watch, just as it hides your crimes from witnesses.
- Surrendering always works - unless you killed one of the watch during that chase.
- A crime is charged once. Running from one group of guards and meeting another no longer charges you for the same crime twice.
- Dying online ends the chase. You wake up no longer wanted, but anything already charged against your name stays in full. Only serving a sentence gives any of it back.
Sentences
- Serving your sentence pays your debt. Paying a fine or serving time now gives back what the arrest cost your standing. Assault, murder and treason still leave half of it as a lasting mark. Winning your case in court clears it all.
- A good name no longer makes fines dearer.
- Fixed: a crime committed while fleeing the watch could reach the court without ever being charged. Its sentence then raised your standing.
Banishment
- Only murder and treason can get you banished, and it no longer lasts forever: it lifts after 30 days, or you can buy a pardon at a temple in that region (the watch does not enter temples).
- Online, a banishment keeps the realm's calendar. A computer clock set wrong can no longer end it early.
Mending your name
- A bad name heals faster. A negative standing, with the law or a guild, recovers a point every week instead of every 112 days.
- Temples take penance. Speak to a temple's donation priest in the region: for a price that rises each time, the temple restores five points of your standing with that region's law.
- Paying the temple ends the conversation. After a pardon or a penance, the priest no longer goes straight on to the donation box, where one more key press gave away another 1,000 gold.
- Bounty contracts help. Finishing one improves your standing with that region's law.
Seeing where you stand
- The Standing page shows the law of every region that knows your name - how it sees you, and what it will cost you (a stop's fine, or a pardon's price and the days left on a banishment).
- Every change is announced. When a crime, a sentence, a penance, a contract or a raid's defence changes your standing, a line says so.
Guilds
- Guilds put you on probation before they expel you. Falling below zero standing gets you a warning and time to mend it; you are only expelled if you are still on probation and have fallen well below zero at your next review.
