Patch Notes: The Realm's Door

Online

An out-of-date game can no longer go online. A copy of the game from before online characters arrived could still join, play and trade, but only as an offline character, and nothing it did online could ever come into the realm. It now says "this game is out of date - update it to play online" and stays offline until you update.
The macOS app and the portable Windows app do not update themselves: download the newest build from the website to play online.

If you played a character online on an older version of the game after the realm opened, and Bring online now refuses it, ask the developers on the Discord. They can let that one character in, once, through customs like any other (its loans called in and its gold capped).
