Patch Notes: The Launcher
The desktop app opens on a launcher
- Daggerfall Online now opens on a launcher: the patch notes on the left, your options on the right, and Play at the bottom. Nothing starts until you press Play.
- Updates install before you play. When a new version is out, the launcher downloads it, installs it and reopens by itself, so you play on the same version as everyone online. In a hurry? Play without updating, and it installs when you quit.
- The patch notes are right there. Versions that arrived since you last played are marked New; one on its way is marked Update.
- Your options, beside the notes: your game files (change the folder at any time), your saves folder, the update check (on or off) and Reinstall.
- The Windows installer and the Linux AppImage update themselves. The portable exe and the Mac tell you when a new version is out, with a Download button.
While you play
- A new version that comes out while you play is shown on screen. It installs when you quit, or at once from File > Restart to Update (save first). On a Mac or the portable exe, the File menu's Download gets it.
- Closing the window in the middle of a game now asks "Leave the game?", with Stay the default. Before, the window's X, Alt+F4 and File > Quit did nothing while you were in the world.
- The app has its own icon.
Finding your Daggerfall files
- On first run the launcher looks for Daggerfall itself: Daggerfall Unity's settings, every Steam library, GOG, and a DaggerfallGameFiles.zip unpacked in Downloads, Desktop, Documents or Games. It shows what it finds, and you choose.
- Choose the game's folder, not just ARENA2, and it looks inside for you. Steam's "Browse local files" folder works.
- A folder is only used when it is whole. A folder missing some of the game's files says which ones.
- If the folder you chose before cannot be reached (a drive unplugged, a network share asleep), the launcher says so and offers Try again. It no longer freezes while it waits.
- Choose in the game instead is still there, one click away.
- On a Mac, the launcher points you to DaggerfallGameFiles.zip. Steam and GOG sell Daggerfall for Windows only.
Downloads
- The download buttons on the website always give you the newest version for your system: the Windows installer, the Windows portable exe, the Mac app and the Linux AppImage.
- The app is not code-signed yet. On Windows choose More info, then Run anyway. On a Mac open it once, then choose Open Anyway under System Settings, Privacy & Security.
What's Changed
- The install experience: a Warframe-style launcher, update notifications, one-click downloads, releases published whole - audited twice by @Lattymoy in #429
