Patch Notes: PvP fights

Health in a fight with a player

A fight with a player now uses your real maximum health. The limit is 3,000 health.

One hit or one spell from a player can remove at most 34% of your maximum health. Thus, a player must hit you at least three times to kill you.

The old limit on damage in five seconds is removed. The weapon speed and the spell limit now control how fast damage comes.

Heals in a fight with a player

For 30 seconds after a player hits you, your heals have a limit. All heals together give at most 25% of your maximum health in 15 seconds.

A high Restoration skill increases this limit to a maximum of 35%. Duels now let you heal, with the same limit.

Armour in a fight with a player

Your armour now decreases the damage from the hits of other players. Armour of a better material decreases more damage.

Each kind of armour has different results against blades, blunt weapons and hands. Armour in bad condition gives less protection.

Resistances in a fight with a player

Your resistances now decrease the damage from the spells of other players. A Resist spell on you decreases the damage from its element.

Your race, your Willpower and the resistances of your gear now also decrease this damage. At most 85% of the damage of a spell is stopped. This limit is also true if you are immune.

Archers, mages and warriors

In a fight with a player, each class now has a small advantage against one other class. Archers have an advantage against mages. Mages have an advantage against warriors. Warriors have an advantage against archers.

Your arrows now cause more damage to players. Your spells now cause a little less damage to players. These changes are larger at level 40 and higher.

A Shield spell on you now decreases the damage from the hits of other players. It stops 25% of the damage from a weapon and 35% of the damage from an arrow.

Spells on you in a fight with a player

When a fight with a player can start, a spell that you cast on yourself lasts 1 minute at most. The effects of your items do not change.

Potions in a fight with a player

In a fight with a player, you can drink one potion of each kind in 15 seconds. The kinds are health, magicka and other. A potion that you drink in a fight gives only its first effect.

Armour and spells in a fight with a player

In a fight with a player, each plate piece that you wear increases the magicka cost of your spells by 6%. Each plate piece also makes your casts 3% slower. A chain piece has half of this effect. Leather has no effect. Full plate increases the cost by 42% and makes your casts 21% slower.

Spells and weapons

A spell that you cast at a player uses only its first effect. Your spells can now have a critical hit on a player, as your weapon hits can. Your Critical Strike skill and your Luck set the chance and the size. Only a Damage effect or a heal can have an effect on a player. Drain spells do not have an effect on players for now. Spells of the poison element do not have an effect on players.

Your weapon skill and the damage bonus of your gear now increase the damage of your hits on players.

PvP flag

The PvP zones are Cyrodiil and the open sea. In a PvP zone, press Caps Lock or click the button at the top right to put your PvP flag on or off. You can put your flag on at level 30 or higher. When you do not have your flag, your attacks and spells do not hit players. Thus you can fight monsters near other players safely. When you have your flag, you can attack all players.

After a hit in a PvP fight, you cannot remove your flag for one minute. When you do not have your flag, you can use a Portal Stone anywhere in the zone.

Skulls

A skull shows above the name of a player who has a PvP flag. The skull is white. After a hit in a PvP fight, the skull is gold for one minute. A villain has a red skull. The flag button at the top right shows your skull. The skull also shows on the Overworld view.

Level 30

Below level 30, you cannot attack players and players cannot attack you. At level 30, other players can attack and kill you in a PvP zone. This is also true when you do not have your flag.

Before you go from level 29 to level 30, the game asks you. Click Yes to go to level 30. Click Not yet to stay at level 29. You keep the level, and you can go to level 30 later.

Death in a PvP zone

When you die in a PvP zone, you go to a town. When you return after a death, you do not get safe passage.

Safe passage

You get safe passage only when you walk into a PvP zone across its edge. You do not get safe passage when you teleport into the zone. You also do not get it when you go out of a town or a dungeon in the zone. In a town, players cannot attack you.

Health bars over flagged players

A flagged player in a PvP zone now has a red health bar below the skull. A thin blue line on the bar shows a Shield spell. A player that is not flagged has no bar.

A hidden player in a PvP fight is now not fully hidden. You see a faint body, the skull and the health bar. You do not see the name.

Names near the crosshair

The names of other players show only when you look near them. A name, its skull and its bars come into view slowly and go out of view slowly. This rule is the same in all areas of the world.

The names of your party always show. The name of a player that you hit, or that hit you, in the last minute also shows.

Limits when PvP is on

When your PvP flag is up in Cyrodiil or on the open sea, Levitate stops and you cannot cast it. You fall, but the fall does not cause damage. Your buffs stop when the flag goes up. You cannot cast a buff on yourself. You can cast Shield. The buffs from your items also stop until the flag goes down.

You cannot rest or wait when the flag is up. You cannot ride a horse or a cart. Your run speed and your jump have a limit. The limit is the best value that a character can have without magic. Paralyze does not hit a player.

The reward for a kill

When you kill a player in a PvP zone, you get one item that they wear. The game selects the item at random. It does not select an insured item. Your victim does not drop the items in their bag.

If all the items that they wear are insured, you get the gold of one policy. Your victim keeps the item, and the policy ends. If the gold is too heavy for you, you get a letter of credit.

The villain meter

When you kill a player in a PvP zone, your villain meter can increase. A kill of a player 5 or more levels below you adds to it. A kill of a player with no PvP flag adds more. If that player attacked you or your party first, the kill adds nothing. At 5,000 you are a villain. You have a red skull, and your PvP flag stays on.

The Villainy bar

The Stats page of the pause menu shows your Villainy bar. The bar goes to 10,000, and a red mark shows 5,000.

The villain meter stays

The villain meter stays with your character when you log out or go to a different area. When you kill a monster at your level or higher, the meter goes down by 1. When you complete a quest, it goes down by 200. When you complete a raid, it goes down by 500. A villain does not get this decrease from a raid.

Villains and insurance

When a villain is killed by a player, the insurance of the villain does not keep an item.

The PvP spell bar

When your PvP flag is on in a PvP zone, keys 3 to 0 show a PvP spell bar. Keys 1 and 2 are for potions. With the flag on, you can cast only the spells on this bar. Each spell costs a part of your maximum magicka.

The bar has Damage, Heal, Shield, Resist, Reflect, Absorb, Fortify, Cure, Jump and Speed. Damage is an area spell, and you select its element. To change a slot, release the mouse and click the slot. You can select the spell, its element or attribute, and its icon. A Heal or a buff goes to the party member at your crosshair up to 15 m away. If there is no party member, it goes to you.

New versions of the game

When a new version of the game is available, a line in chat and a banner tell you. After one minute, the game saves your character. Then a screen shows and the game loads the new version. If you are dead or in a duel, the game waits until that stops. It waits for two minutes at most. Click Reload Now to load the new version immediately.

Shared Shattered Hour

A player who is not in a party goes into a shared Shattered Hour. A shared Hour now holds 40 players. Before, it held 8 players.
