Patch Notes: The Witches' Festival

The first live event, from 20 October to 7 November.

Soul Cakes

  • Killing foes, gathering, crafting, fishing, winning tavern games, finishing quests and bounties, sailing, the endgame and holding a fallen star can all earn you Soul Cakes. They go straight into your pack.
  • The dead and the summoned give them more often.
  • Every find is doubled on All Hallows' Eve, 31 October, and on the in-game 13th of Frostfall and 3rd of Hearthfire, when the dead walk (about an hour of real time each).
  • You need a linked account and must be online to keep Soul Cakes.

The Wyrd Sister

A Glenmoril witch stands outside the taverns. Trade your Soul Cakes with her for:

  • The Wyrd's Raiment: a nine-piece Aetheric set: eight leather pieces, so casters can wear it, and the Witchmoon Athame. Its set bonuses are Wyrd-Sight, Tallow-Ward and Soul Harvest.
  • Witchwarden: a title.
  • Witchfire: an aura of green fire and tallow candles.
  • Profile icons: a new kind of cosmetic, worn in your portrait instead of your face and seen by other players. Three to buy, one to earn.
  • Six festival cards for the Iliac Hand, including the legendary King Lysandus' Spectre.
  • Hearth Offerings.

Hearth Offerings

  • Set a Hearth Offering out at the door of your home and fill it with Soul Cakes.
  • Other players can take one cake from each offering per day.
  • You can take your offering back in at any time, even after the festival. You get back the bowl and every cake still in it.
  • When other players have taken 25 cakes from your offerings, you earn the Hearthkeeper title.
  • Take 10 cakes from other players' offerings to earn the Soul Cake icon.

The towns

Every town is decorated in its own region's style:

  • turnip lanterns and straw effigies in High Rock
  • candles and bowls of fire in Hammerfell
  • bonfires and horned skulls in the mountains
  • ward-staves in the fens
  • bones in the Haunted Woodlands

The Starfall

  • Every real hour is a night. Each night one of the Bay's twelve covens pulls three stars down into the wilds of its region, each near a different town.
  • A new star burns in the sky for a minute and a half before it falls. Chat names the town it is falling toward, and the map, the compass and the Timers window point to it.
  • When it lands, hold it. The coven comes in four waves, then their master. What they summon goes for the star itself, and if its light runs out, the coven takes it.
  • The master calls a circle twice. While any of the circle stands, the master takes only a quarter of every blow. Break the circle first.
  • An unheld star is lost 15 minutes after it falls.
  • On the 13th of Frostfall, the night's last star is the Heart-Star. Its master's circle is twice the size, and so are its rewards.
  • A held star gives Renown, 30 silver, gold, 1 to 3 pieces of Starfall Glass, a magic item or better, and Soul Cakes. Your account card counts your Stars held.
  • Starfall Glass is pale glass that still holds some of the star's light. It stacks, and any merchant pays well for it.
  • One star in four also gives a piece of the Starspun Weave, Mephala's nine-piece set. The Heart-Star always gives one.
    • 2 pieces, Spinner's Thread: poison resistance and Agility.
    • 4 pieces, Bound in Silk: every 4th full-weight weapon hit on the same enemy deals 60 to 140% more damage.
    • 6 pieces, Mephala's Veil: a hit that drops you below 30% health gives you Chameleon for 10 seconds. It recovers in 4 minutes.

The Thirteenth of Frostfall

  • A new festival questline from Morwen, a Wyrd Sister of Glenmoril. It opens at level 6, online with a registered account, while the festival runs. A Wyrd Sister hands you Morwen's letter, or her raven brings it if you hold a star first.
  • Hold a fallen star, face the Coven on the Bluff, then hold three more stars to earn the title Starwarden and 30 Soul Cakes. The Wyrd Sisters' window shows the title once you hold it.
  • Holding the Heart-Star during Three Stars is an optional objective: it pays more and adds Morwen's Heart-Star Ring to your choice of reward.
  • At the end, decide what becomes of the Spinner's spindle: burn it in Hircine's fire, sell it to the Mages Guild, or take it to a priest of Arkay at Arkay's own temple. Each choice has its own reward.
  • If the festival ends partway through a star step, the step waits and picks up again where it stood. It never fails.

Fixes

  • The compass on the Enhanced HUD now shows the Sea Serpent and a found Abyss Dungeon. Both marks were being dropped before they reached it.
