Linux Test 7

latest release: v0.2.10
pre-release4 hours ago

This is the seventh test release of the native Linux version of B2recomp. It is a pre-release: the Windows version is v0.2.9. As always, this download contains no game files: the game is built on your PC from your own dump.

Opening an issue on GitHub: it must be written in English and have the report attached (b2recomp-report.tar.gz: press Report... in the launcher, or run sh scripts/report.sh). An issue opened without both will be closed promptly.

New since Linux Test 6

The fixes of Windows v0.2.9. Most matter only with Frame rate (beta) above 60; at 60 fps the game plays as before.

  • The world no longer freezes after a slow motion. At the end of some slow-motion moments in events, the game could stand still for 5 to 30 seconds at 120 fps, with the music still playing, until a longer frame came by. Fixed, and slow motions now last as long as at 60 fps.
  • Hit-stop, Witch Time and input windows keep their timing. Some of the game's timers only count for a while after an event: the pause when a hit lands, the end of Witch Time, input windows, enemy holds and waits. Above 60 fps they ran twice as fast; they now count in 60 fps frames (79 more of them, 114 in all).
  • Steadier pictures above 60 fps. Pictures go out on a steady beat at the chosen frame rate instead of the moment each one is ready. On Linux the beat is the game's own clock (the Linux version has no display lock yet).
  • The log's reports are written at once instead of in dozens of small writes (a late frame every 300 frames at 120 fps).
  • Two of v0.2.9's speed-ups depend on Windows tracking which memory the game wrote (vertex data kept on the graphics card, the texture check in groups). The Linux version has no such tracking yet, so they change nothing on Linux.

Updating from an earlier Linux test release

Unzip B2recomp-linux-builder-affeda0.zip over your old B2recomp folder and start B2recomp. It says that B2recomp was updated; press Build (a short rebuild, about two minutes), then Play. Your settings and saves stay.

New install

  1. Unzip B2recomp-linux-builder-affeda0.zip where you want to keep the game, for example ~/Games.
  2. Open the folder and start B2recomp: double-click it, or in a terminal run sh ./B2recomp.
  3. Choose your dump folder (one folder that holds exefs/ and romfs/ of Bayonetta 2, version 1.2), press Build (5 to 20 minutes, depending on your CPU), then Play.

You need 64-bit Linux from about 2022 or newer with a desktop (X11 or Wayland) and a Vulkan 1.3 driver (Mesa for AMD and Intel, or NVIDIA's own driver). START HERE.txt in the zip has the details.

Known limits of this test release

  • The game times its frames with its own clock, not with your monitor's refresh as the Windows version does. You may see a slight judder now and then.
  • The renderer finds out which textures the game changed by checksumming them (on Windows the system tracks this), which costs a little more CPU per frame.
  • The v0.2.9 fixes were tested on Windows; the Linux build compiles the same changes, but they have not been tried on Linux yet.
  • Tested on Arch-based systems (CachyOS) with an NVIDIA RTX 4060 laptop and an AMD RX 560, on KDE and Hyprland (Wayland). Other distributions should work, but are untested.

Reporting problems

Press Report... in the launcher, or run sh scripts/report.sh in the B2recomp folder. It makes b2recomp-report.tar.gz with the logs and your PC's details, and nothing of the game. Never attach game files.

Issues must be written in English and must have the report attached. An issue opened without both will be closed promptly.
